Hey there, sister. Welcome back to Pause for Menopause. I am your host, Salila Sukumaran, a generational Ayurveda wisdom keeper from the south of Kerala, living between Kerala, the epicenter of Ayurveda, and California. My home. I exist in these two worlds and I understand what you go through, and I am able to unlock the principles of Ayurveda from the classic Shastras in a way that it's useful for you. If you've been tuning in, you know we don't do surface-level fixes here. We go straight to the root. Today, we need to have an honest, big sisterly kitchen table chat. Let's talk about something that is driving so many of us absolutely mad. Let me ask you, have you looked in the mirror recently and stared down at your belly and thought, why did my waist expand overnight? You haven't changed your diet, you haven't stopped working out, but suddenly your favorite jeans are pinching, your belly feels heavy, and you are asking yourself Why on earth am I putting on weight right here, right now? Now, if you search the internet for answers, you run straight into the jaws of the industrial wellness complex. You know exactly what I'm talking about. Frantic fitness influencers screaming at you from their feed, do this 15-minute high-intensity workout, drink this green protein powder, fast for 18 hours. They treat your changing body like an enemy that needs to be starved and beaten into submission. Ugh, I wouldn't do that to my worst enemy, so I want you to stop. These influencers are driven by product sales, and when they tell you, they are driving fear into you so that you will end up buying whatever it is that they are selling. And it is precisely why they keep telling you that you are not trying hard enough. Because your attempts to reach their impossible standards and the moving goalposts is what keeps their cash registers going ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching. Sister, I want you to take a deep breath right now. Drop your shoulders. Let it all go. Let's start afresh. This frantic punitive wellness culture is not just exhausting, it is biologically the worst thing you can do for your body right now in this transitional phase. Let's look at the hard signs so you know you aren't crazy. Your waist expanding is not an illusion. During menopause, during perimenopause, estrogen declines dramatically. When estrogen drops, your fat storage completely relocates. Normally, during a month of a period, the estrogen makes a beautiful curve up and down. And while we are going through perimenopause, we have pitfalls, daily pitfalls, sometimes pitfalls every other 15 minutes, and that can drive our body cuckoo. Modern medical research shows a clear biological pivot. Soft protective fat right under our skin, which gives us that nice plump, juicy look starts to move into a rapid buildup of visceral fat. This is the inflammatory fat. This is Ama that wraps around our internal organs. And this cascade builds for months, sometimes years, and then crosses a visible threshold all at once overnight. And that is why it feels like, oh my God, you wake up, and your belly looks poofy, and no matter what you do, it's not budging. But here is where relief lies. A landmark review in Frontiers in Pharmacology focused on traditional medicinal plants for managing postmenopausal weight. The data confirms that specific traditional herbs— and if you thought shatavari, you are bang on— contain plant-derived phytoestrogens. These bind directly to our cellular receptors, mimicking the hormonal pathways that we need for the plummeting estrogen to be buttressed, to be supported with plant-based estrogens. They actually help inhibit the formation of new fat cells, and they enhance our body's natural capacity to generate metabolic Eat. Your body is not failing you, I promise you. It is simply a regulatory system that has shifted its attention from one part of the body to the other, just like you did in puberty, just like you did in pregnancy, during lactation, during the challenging, uh, stressful times in your life. Your body shifted. It's shifting now. And we will hang in there as our body finds its rhythm in this new way of being. In Ayurveda, this stage is called as Rajonivritti. Simply Raja, period, Nivritti, the cessation, the stoppage. The classical texts obviously treat it as a natural transition. It's not pathology, it's not a disease. Nothing has to be done here extraordinary. Ayurveda divides a woman's life into 3 phases. You have Kapha in the youth, which means you are full of that ojas, that growth, that sustainability in your tissues, and you are built to gain bodily strength and you built to gain in your stature. Your organs develop, your muscles develop, your skeleton grows. It's a Kapha phase. We are Pitta through our reproductive years. Naturally, we need to have a steady period, our fertility needs to be on point, and our body needs to be able to support childbearing and lactation. And Vata are the years around the corner, about 35 plus, and after menopause. Vata is the principle of movement, it is the air element, It is the space element, so it is what creates dryness, brittleness, and change in our body. So our body is starting to becoming a little bit not so settled as it was in the Kapha stages. It is starting to lose some of that strength and the balance and the structure. And the remedy is in the problem itself. When Vata rises and Pitta aggravates, we bring in Kapha to cool and nourish. And here's what matters for your belly. Rising Vata disturbs your Agni, the Pitta, which is your digestive fire. And Agni, not just in the stomach acid, but also the cellular Agni, our capacity to transform food, stress, and life experiences into usable energy in ourselves. When advancing Vata pulls the Agni off its course, your digestion turns irregular. What used to move through efficiently now sits in a place and gets stuck. And that what sits and becomes still is called Ama, undigested residue that the body stores, and often right at the waist. And this is why the belly you got in your 20s from a heavy weekend is a totally different animal from the one you had at 42 or 47 or 52 and beyond. That early one was Kapha-heavy, responsive to the eat less, move more agenda. This one is Vata-driven. It is going to be erratic. It is going to be tied to a highly activated nervous system. So it needs rebuilding, not punishing. Think about what happens when you apply standard internet fitness advice to this delicate state. You wake up early, you skip breakfast, you force your body to fast, and you crush a high-intensity workout. What are you actually doing? You are pumping cortisol into your bloodstream by the gallons. You are throwing a massive blast of cold, chaotic wind directly into a delicate, already flickering fire. When your metabolism is stressed via extreme deprivation during hormonal transitions, your body will lock down fat storage as an act of pure survival. We do not fight the cold wind of Vata with force, not by the Ayurvedic philosophy. We soothe it with deep warmth, grounding, stability, and targeted herbal intelligence. Now, I've come to believe that we women have 9 lives, one for every decade of our life. Our body is literally a different country in each season. Once we cross our mid-30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond, we have to realize we are receiving a new system update. Just as we were completely different from the ages of 0 to 8, and then our tween years and teenage years, and then our youth. Here we are now, after childbearing, after taking care of children, Here we are in a new phase where our body is going through a redistribution of that very energy, that very Ojas, which was traveling outward, is now coming back inward. Let's make this completely actionable. How do we gently stoke that metabolic fire without triggering a systemic alarm? We use a specialized, clinically grounded Ayurvedic protocol to rebuild your Agni from the inside out. The entire protocol, I call it my 5:21 Method. But here are 3 daily rituals that you can use from that. First, we clear the debris that's building up in our body with Triphala la la la, because Triphala is our best friend. When Agni drops, Ama accumulates. To clear this debris without drying out your digestive tract, we use Triphala. This formula is legendary, and it is a precise blend of 3 fruits: Amlaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. The Ayush Ministry says that Triphala is a premier Rasayana. So don't look at the shrieking influencers who tell you that Triphala is drying. Yes, it does have that property, but then when you have it in a proper manner, then you are not going to feel the drying effects of it. Instead, it is going to tone your gut, modulate your microbiome, and act as a powerful anti-inflammatory. It is perfectly safe to take about half a teaspoon of high-quality triphala powder mixed into a cup of warm water 30 minutes before bed. It will cleanse the colon and allow for your metabolism to reset, while you rest. The second ritual is to fuel your fire with warmth and black salt. If you don't listen to anything that I say but walk away with just this one thing, you still have made a difference to the symptoms that you're experiencing during perimenopause, menopause. That is to stop paralyzing your digestion with raw cold salads and freezing green smoothies first thing in the morning. Cold intake constricts our gastric blood supply and dampens our Agni instantly. So the ritual is to switch to warm cooked meals. Add a generous pinch of black salt to all your savory dishes. Black salt activates your liver's metabolic functions and kickstarts your digestion naturally. The third ritual I want to talk to you about is to flood your system with safe nourishment. Instead of punishing your body with exhausting cardio, protect your lean muscle with mindful movement like vinyasa or hatha yoga, transformer Pilates, rowing, swimming, or long grounding walks. Balance this out with the ultimate traditional antidote to Vata dryness, Abhyanga, Self-massage with warm sesame oil. Before your morning shower, gently massage warm organic sesame oil into your skin, moving in clockwise circles over your abdomen and other rounded parts. Give your girlies 10 clockwise massage strokes and 10 counterclockwise strokes every day to keep them healthy. Sesame oil is deeply warming and heavy. It penetrates the tissues and calms the nervous system. Decreases the Vata-driven bloating and signals to your body that it is safe to let go of stored visceral fat insulation. What I like to do right after a nice self-massage is to jump in place and twist in place. I do about 100 if I have no time, and I do about 5 sets of 100 each if I have plenty of time and I'm resting up. This really helps my lymphatic drainage going, and it helps and gives time to the oil to penetrate deep into my tissues. Now let's talk about something that really grounds me and gives me further direction. As you know, I am a lineage keeper. I am a matriarchal wisdom keeper, and I therefore think in archetypes, especially because I observe the Navadurgas. The 9 aspects of the Divine Feminine who watches over a woman's life. Our birth is protected by Maa Parvati, this daughter of Himalayas. Our childhood is watched over by Brahmacharini, and our partnerships are in Goddess Chandika's hands, who gives us the power to offer tough love when it's needed, Our motherhood is taken care of by Maa Skandamata. The goddess of perimenopause and menopause is Goddess Katyayani. She is the fierce aspect of the divine feminine who protects us through this transition. And Katyayani asks us to pause and observe. This is not a time for frenzy. It's a time of retreat into ourselves. Things are shifting. So stay within your witness consciousness. Trust that this wisdom will carry us beautifully well into our 60s, 70s, into our hundreds if we do perimenopause right. And if you take just one truth from our conversation today, let it be this: your waist did not expand overnight because you failed, because you lacked discipline, or because your body turned against you. It changed because your internal landscape shifted. Your Agni faced a rising Vata wind, and the modern world forgot to give you the map designed for this sacred autumn of life. You do not need to be fixed. You do not need to be restricted. You need to be deeply, beautifully rebuilt with warmth, rhythm, and patience. Try these simple shifts this week. Unfollow 10 Instagram accounts right now that make you feel bad about your body. They are not worth hanging on to. Step entirely away from the frantic noise of the world and come all the way home to your own brilliant body. And please stop looking at social media first thing when you wake up. It's like a wallop with a wet fish.
