In this solo YouTube segment, Sally reflects on a week of conversations with small business owners in Adelaide, uncovering recurring pain points and offering practical solutions. She notes that most owners are seeking more customers and leads, yet struggle with weak sales processes and overlook easy growth opportunities. Key missed opportunities include failing to reconnect with past clients, not implementing referral strategies, and neglecting authentic storytelling that shares personal heritage and problem‑solving narratives. Additionally, many businesses lack clear service packaging, presenting add‑on services in a fragmented way, and they spread their efforts across too many tactics instead of focusing on one or two high‑impact actions. Sally advises owners to personally re‑engage former customers, ask for referrals, share genuine stories to forge emotional connections, bundle services into cohesive offers, and concentrate on the few strategies that truly drive profitability.

Hi, it's Sally here. Just thought I'd share a few stories from the week that's been. It's Sunday here and I've spent a week speaking to lots of Adelaide small local business owners and there's been some real commonalities and some really good conversations. So the commonalities was they were all wanting more customers or more leads and obviously more customers relates to more profitability. Lots of them struggled with their sales process or didn't feel like they actually did sell or wanted to sell. And some of the commonalities that I was finding with them was that there were— a lot of them were actually missing opportunities that were right in front of them. And that comes back to the saying that you can't see the forest for the trees sort of thing, or the tree for the forest. So lots of the opportunities they were missing out on generating easy sales and gaining more easier customers and more profitability was that they weren't looking at their past client list or they weren't in contact with their past clients. And I don't necessarily mean an email or a newsletter thing, just that real personal, personal connection and telling something interesting or new that's occurring in their businesses that some of those customers might actually like to know. The other thing lots of them weren't doing were they weren't actually asking for referrals or didn't have a referral strategy in place to to gain customers. And some of the marketing statistics are, for example, you've got the likelihood of selling to a new customer of around 10 to 20%, whereas the opportunity to sell to an existing customer is much closer to that 60 to 70%. So there's a real opportunity in speaking to some of those past or lapsed clients and re-engaging them. Many of the business owners that I worked— was speaking with weren't sharing enough of themselves in their business. They'd got very clever at doing certain things, but they weren't sharing some of their own stories or sharing stories of problems that they've actually solved for clients. And a big one was that they weren't actually sharing the story behind their story. They weren't sharing some of the heritage or their heritage, whether that's a family generational experience in a particular industry or some of the great things that they'd achieved because of the experiences and the knowledge that they'd gained over a long time. So a lot of those stories, and especially those heritage stories that are really truthful for the person, for you as the business owner, that is really relevant to the customers that you serve, is that really helps you invoke that emotional connection with your clients. And people are looking for that real humanisation or that connection with people that they do business with. Another one that business owners were missing was packaging. They weren't packaging up their services. They offered 2 or 3 fundamental services, but they have these little add-on services that were they just did to add value. But when they actually they had the opportunity to actually look at that bit differently and package it up into something a bit more to tell more of a story as to the services overall that they provided, this often resulted in time-saving opportunities and and dollar-saving opportunities for the clients that they. And your clients want those sorts of services. They want to know that you have those services so they can buy from you. And one of the other things that was really, really common speaking to many of the business owners is that they were doing lots and lots of things hoping that they would be working instead of actually really knowing the one or two things that do work in their business and doing them in an exceptional way. And that is one of the keys to generating some great business and getting more customers into your business so you're more profitable. So I hope that's helped, and I look forward to speaking with you again soon. Have a fantastic day. Cheers.
