Two speakers explain why overeating damages digestion, comparing it to overfilling a blender. They introduce hara hachi bu, a Japanese practice of eating until eighty percent full instead of stuffed, and discuss how to recognize when your body has had enough.
If you have a blender and you fill it till the very brim and you try switching the power on, will the food be able to get mixed? No. You have to fill it maybe just halfway or three-fourths way and leave some space empty so that the mixing work can happen. Same is true for our bodies. Often today we are eating two to three times more than our capacity.
I recently interviewed a Japanese guest and he says the Japanese have something called hara hachi bu, which is eat only to eighty percent. Hara hachi bu means saying like stop to eat.
My stomach fill eighty percent.
He is a nutritionist. People don't need to eat even to eighty percent because you and I are desk jockeys. Literally, I tell people eat to your heart's content. What is the size of your heart? This blender example is mind-blowing.
