Episode 12: Scale Your Health Podcast Revenue by Building an Effective Team
28 Mar 2024 · 21 min
Hosts Sammy Taggett and Ray explain how building the right team can scale a health-focused podcast and business without harming health or relationships. They use a case study of Dr. Betty Murray (show pivoted to "Menopause Mastery") to show how adding a social media team increased engagement (from ~100 likes to ~5,000). They recommend using the Kolbe test (kolbe.com) to identify strengths across four action modes (Fact Finder, Follow Through, Quick Start, Implementation) and match people to roles, and suggest supplementing human teams with AI tools (ChatGPT, Opus Video AI, Personal AI, Swell AI, Decipher) to cover weaknesses. They outline Evolve Podcasting’s service models (DIY course, Done-With-You, Done-For-You/Cadillac) and offer a podcast audit via HealthyProfitsPodcast.com/audit.

Yes. We are back, my friend, my love, my queen.
And listeners.
And listeners, we are so excited to go over this episode with you guys today and bring this episode to you. Because this is the magic on how to scale not just your show, but literally your life and your business. I know. That is a big, big.
And how.
Yeah, by building the right team.
Yeah, this is going to be an episode all around team. Because we've just seen how much a team and the right team can help support a podcast in really getting to the next level and really becoming a monetization tool.
And not even just a monetizing tool like this. This episode is the quintessential episode. You need to scale your life. And to scale not just the show. It's insane what this does. And when I read any development book or business book, the number one thing they say that you should do, it's beyond your marketing, it's beyond your sales, it's beyond all of that. It is hiring the right people and building the team properly.
Totally. And especially for health and wellness entrepreneurs. We know you're not trying to ruin your life and your health because of your business. And so we always, I mean, we're surrounded by you guys, we're surrounded by doctors and people that really take their health seriously. And so we've learned about the importance of work, life balance. And we know that putting yourself out there and scaling a business can be something that could potentially destroy your health, your relationships, your life. And so this is a way that we found and we've run through some crunchy times with team, and we've also seen how amazing team can be in terms of growing and scaling. And we haven't only seen it for ourselves, but also with the clients that we work with inside of Evolve Podcasting.
Absolutely. And one of the amazing shows and clients that we work with is Dr. Betty Murray. And we bring her up because she has an incredible story of when she came to us, we started her show. It originally wasn't called Menopause Mastery. It was this thriving life, I believe, and that was okay, but she was working herself to the bone and she had this show. We made a pivot with her show when she relaunched with us, which was amazing. Right? And you remember this. We pivoted the show, turned it into Menopause Mastery. That name really helped. Then we noticed this flatlining of what was happening, and she was dumping tons of time and money into this. And not tons of money, actually. She was just paying the normal rate, but it was so much time on her part. And she wasn't seeing the traction that so many of you guys don't see when you make your podcast. And it's. It's a. A cycle that we want to get you out of. And so we saw when she brought in this team, I was like, oh, my God, this is what you needed. And it was so cool to witness this and that Her. Her explosion was with social media. She found a great team that brought in that support that she needed.
And because she had a brick and mortar, she was running, There was a lot going on. And I think a lot of doctors and health practitioners, you are so passionate about your mission, and. And so you're using every angle, every little bit of energy you have to get the word out there to help people. And so, yeah, we just saw that for Betty. Like, she. She was doing it all, but she was flatlining. And the interesting thing was the show was actually getting better. Right? Her show, her interviewing, her storytelling, the episodes themselves were actually getting better, but she needed a bigger audience. There was a flatlining that was happening in the numbers and the downloads and in the interaction.
Absolutely was so painful because as her producer and her friend, really, she's one of my dear, dear friends. It was gut wrenching to see that happening. And once she installed this new team, and we're actually going to give you some really cool tools on how to create the right team in this episode, so don't go anywhere. But what's great is she started going from like a hundred likes on her podcast into like 5000 likes.
And wait, let's highlight that A hundred likes to five thousand. That is huge.
Yeah. On her reels and on her stories, things just started to take off. And how she did that is she ended up bringing on a social media team. And I know a lot of you guys may not be bringing on a social media team. We're not saying that's the first thing you need to do, but what she did is she found a way to take a team and fill in where she was weak. And that's the big point we want to help you do is create this team around you that can really uplift you where you're not strong. And that's what she did. She created a way to fill in the gaps where she wasn't strong. Now, what I'm about to tell you is this incredible tool that you can give to the departments in your company if you have maybe an EA or you have a VA or somebody, or.
You'Re in the hiring process.
Absolutely. This is the tool that we used that completely shifted the way we were not getting things done and it shifted how fast I could get things done around me, which is.
Well, it shifted the efficiency of everyone on our team when we started using this tool.
Yeah. Which was.
We use a tool called the Colby test. And the Colby test is an incredible aptitude test that you can give anyone in your team. And especially for myself, I took it before anyone else did. And this test allowed me to create the most perfect team around me. And what the test will test for is where I'm the most creative at solving problems inside my business. And it tests in four different categories. One is whether or not I'm a fact finder. The second one is if I'm follow through or strong and follow through. The third is implementation. And the fourth is a quick start. And I might be mixing up the order, but it is going to be fact finding, follow through, quick start and A implementation. So what you'll do is take this very quick test. It takes about 10 minutes. It's online k o l b e.com it's the Colby test. And you'll find out where you're strong. And I was very strong in implementation and Quick start, which a lot of, lot of entrepreneurs are doctors and a lot of people that I've seen. And you're like, Ray is much higher in fact finding and follow through, which was great as a couple starting and working in a business because she really mirrored in a perfect way what I needed strength in, which was follow through and fact finding. And my follow through was a three and my fact finding was like a two and my quickstart.
And you're really representing, I think, a lot of visionaries. And so founders and people like that tend to have those similar traits as you.
Oh, absolutely. And the trait we were also having, what I was alluding to too is I had a 9 on quick start and an 8 on implementation. So what, what happens when I get somebody like me?
Which feels good. It feels, it feels so good to hire someone like you. You're like, you get me?
Yeah.
But then we know doesn't work.
We saw so many open loops, so many things not getting done. And that is worse than having somebody that you like working with you. It's worse being in the so called foxhole with someone and you're getting things piled up because you can't get things to, to close and to follow through. And so what I did is I started having all the new hires take this test. And so when we brought in Tiana, who's in Our team, she is so much higher on follow through and fact finding. It's incredible. And she helps create the teams that also work together like that as well. So when you use this tool, the Colby test, you can really accelerate how you build your team, whether you have people that work for you now or not. I've had a lot of people say, I moved this person into a different role with a different person because they were so much higher in a certain category from this test. But again, that's the Kolbe test. K O L B E. And that will allow you to go in and really structure your teams that you build.
Yeah. And then there's a really cool other thing that's happening in the world is that you can do the Colby test and you can find out where your weaknesses and strengths are. And there's this whole other world where you can get team or support from dun, dun, dun. Again, AI, Right. Maybe it's not actually hiring more people, but it's working smarter, more efficiently. And so if you know the weaknesses that you have, you can actually bring in different AI tools to work as teammates. And so if you know which AI tools are going to support your weaknesses, that's also a cool way to do it without, you know, I hear so many people getting overwhelmed with, where do I even start with AI? There's so much out there. Well, if you actually know yourself more, then you can seek out the AI tools that will support you in your weaknesses.
And what would be a great way for them to figure out which AI tool works the best for them? Maybe an audit from us overall. Podcasting. Yeah.
Well, and let's explain why, because this is a unique thing that Sammy has this in his back pocket. But Sammy's been diving into the world of AI for a long time now, and I think that's something that we don't necessarily share all the time, but a reason why we've seen so much quick growth in our company and also for a lot of our clients, is because we're implementing AI throughout the entire production and marketing. And this is what we like to teach our clients as well. So Sammy's been speaking on stages and masterminds all around the world as one of the leaders in how to use AI in business, especially in health and wellness businesses. And, yeah, if you're going to jump in and you're one of the lucky people that get to have a podcast audit, we will. And Sammy will be able to dive into that and help strategize with you which AI tools you can use. To cover and support you in your weaknesses.
Did you just pimp me up?
I did.
You did just pimp me out. I love when she does that. Feel weird.
It did it until you said something.
No, but in. In all seriousness, the ability to utilize. Yes. The AI world, to fill in the gaps where you're weak are things that you can really, really lean on right away. Absolutely. From ChatGPT to Opus Video AI to Personal AI to Swell AI and Decipher. I mean, all of these tools are accessible right at your fingertips. And what I'll do is have our crew list some of those here for you. So you do have some resources. But make sure you book an audit with us so we can really walk through where you guys might be, I wouldn't say weak, but where you could use a little leveling and balance in what you're doing.
And so it's a combination, I think, of using AI and then also bringing in that personal touch of having your people, your team there to support you. And that's been the magical sauce that I think, of. All podcasting has really found is that we have an incredible team of brilliant minds behind each of these podcasts, each of our clients, and we are using these tools. And so there is the human touch that comes along with the. The rapid efficiency and growth that happens with AI. So, yeah, coming up with your most effective team is not only people, and it's not only tools, but it's truly the perfect combination that matches your strengths and weaknesses as the leader of your boat.
I love it. The leader of your boat.
Yeah.
So, you guys, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out for an audit. Check the resources out that are in the show notes and share this. If you really know somebody that needs support in building the right team and how to build the right team, this is the episode for them.
Yeah, because sometimes I feel like you're also, just, like, struggling. I remember before I had a team, maybe I just had a va, like, one VA right when I was starting out, and I didn't even realize that I needed a team because I didn't even have a moment to pause to think about it. And so be a good friend if you're hearing this and you know someone that's out there that has their podcast and they're in that, they're just treading water nonstop. That is the time to really get that support. And maybe they need to hear this episode. Things can be a lot easier and a lot smoother, and your time can be spent in much Better ways, focusing on sales and growth and all of that, and then being able to be the face and the voice for the message that you're sharing. I know all of our clients are like, just put me on video and I'll do great talking, but all the other stuff, it feels like a lot. And that's where we get to come in, because we love doing all that other stuff.
Absolutely. All right, you guys enjoy. Happy podcasting. We'll see you again next time on the Healthy Profits Podcast.
Peace out.
Screech sound inserted. All right, so we finished wrapping up this episode and pretty much immediately after realized, wait, we didn't even talk about how we have set up our teams to support our clients using a lot of this stuff that we talked about in this episode. So it's crazy. We're back. We just had to add on this little segment. Let's talk about it. So with all the different ways that you can find different people's strengths, that's basically how we have ended up creating our teams at Evolve Podcasting. So it's pretty cool because we use the Colby test to figure out, okay, where.
First of all, getting the right people and then getting them in the right seats. That was something that we learned from Traction, which has been an incredible book. We highly recommend that book for any leaders and entrepreneurs. And so that was a big part of our mission last year. Right?
Huge part.
And so, of course, we have different ways that we work with our clients and our team works with our clients. So we have our do it yourself model where they can actually just come in and take our resources and apply them with their own team. Like what we were sharing in the episode around how to gather your own team around you and the effective ways to scale your team. Build that strong, powerful team that can do the things that you're maybe not as good at.
I think it's interesting, too, with that do it yourself course, that it literally pulls back the curtain on all the things we do. Totally.
You can do everything that we do.
Yeah. You could start a known agency.
Manpower.
You. Well, you need a lot of manpower, and you for sure need some organization. Oh, yeah, I know. I knew all that stuff, but it was still shocking at how much I realized we were doing after I built that course.
Yeah, there's definitely quite a bit that goes into to launching a podcast and podcast creation and the consistency of syndication and marketing it. So there's. There's that piece, then there's also the do it with you, which is what really most of our clients like to do in our agency where they really get to utilize our teams that we've built. And we also pair our team. You know, we have different members that we know will be a better fit for certain clients depending on how the clients come to us. You know, if you're more organized or you're more in the visionary space, we'll make sure that our team supports you and highlights your strengths with the follow.
Through or the fact finding. And they, they just really using that Colby test, we make sure that we know how to really blanket our clients so that they're surrounded by the ultimate success team and let them just like.
Stand in the light and, and do their thing and then let our team really support them along. So that's our done with you model, which we love doing because there's that level of collaboration we get to work with. Also most of our clients do have a small team already and it's just this melting pot of brilliant minds that get to come together and really execute also on the ideas and put it out there and get it going. And again, everyone is living and breathing in their own strengths. And then the really cool model is the Cadillac. The Cadillac the.
Done for you which is all about us actually building out this ideal team. We've spent this time to really understand team building and team management and scaling. We've created the systems and the organization that needs to happen in order for a podcast to get its momentum towards success and monetization. And so the done for you model is for people that are ready to actually just have a team built around them. And we build out the whole team, we launch them, we give them that six month Runway where we can be adjusting and tweaking strategies and making sure that it's really going on the right track. And then what do we do, Sammy?
We step aside and, and we give you, we give you the team.
Which is crazy because so much energy and investments go into the building of the team itself. But this has been a really fun model to share because then it's your team and you get to take over. You know, how you get to continue to pour that oil into that machine that we build? Those are for our super high end.
Super high end clients. But what I think the people that have thought of this and looked at it that got really excited about it were people that wanted to build not just their agency, but looking to build a network of other podcasts that could possibly be underneath them. People that, that fit into this model really well are people that are at the heads of maybe a multi level marketing company in health and wellness so that they have a ton of different people underneath them that are all building their own personal brands. And you can build your first agency and then have podcasts underneath you. So it's a pretty exciting thing just.
To have something you need leaders, that type of.
Totally. But you gotta be on top of your game for sure. This is not a. Is not the space that we suggest that you start. Unless you have some acumen with managing teams, of course.
And you're gonna already have your own team. This would be it.
Add on to your team an adjunct, if you will.
So we just wanted to come on here and peel back our kimono, as Sami loves to say, and share how our teams are actually built and how we work with our clients. So I hope that gives you guys another perspective not only on how you can build your most effective team, but you might also be listening, being like, wow, this sounds like a lot of work. How do I just kind of skip ahead? And so here's that card if anyone needs to play it. So of course, like, always feel free to reach out and make sure that.
You hit our audit. If you have your podcast, that is our big, big gift to you is to make sure you go in and get yourself an audit with one of our team members to let you know what you're missing with your podcast and how you can monetize that successfully and grow it successfully. So go there. That's in our show notes. Or you can go to. Which I'm actually so excited to announce. HealthyProfits podcast.com forward/audit. Woohoo.
