Episode 32: Stop Introducing Yourself: How To Actually Gain Positioning Power
6 Jun 2024 · 13 min
Ray Ireland and Sammy Taggett explain why you should stop introducing yourself by title and instead use third-party testimonials and coached introductions. A video testimonial from Vishen at Mindvalley shows how it works. Practice by having a friend introduce you at your next event or podcast appearance.

Hey, everyone. Welcome back to the Healthy Profits podcast. I'm your co host, Ray, and I have with me.
My co host. No, you're my co host. I'm your co host.
Okay. This is Sammy Chewbox Moses, my co host.
And this is Ray Ireland, my co host today on the Healthy Profits podcast, which is what brings us to the topic of this show.
Yes. So have you ever been in our seat where you are recording an episode? Maybe you've been listening to our other Healthy Profits podcast episodes and even hearing. Position yourself as the expert on your show and you can use these tools to really gain authority and gain trust. These are all amazing things. But then maybe you put it into action and you're like, this is like falling short, it's landing flat. Maybe you even are just practicing introducing yourself in person and you're realizing, okay, their eyes are glazing over. This is not going the way that I thought I had practiced my elevator pitch. What's happening? So anyways, today in this episode, we're going to go into giving you a hack to bypass that, that uncomfortability. All of the stuff that comes up when you're trying to introduce yourself and really put your name out there and make a stance for your name. One thing that you'll see is you can say all the right words and you can practice it and you can have a copywriter help sort this all out. But energetically, there's one key shift that can really change the whole conversation and really can change the actions that someone will take on the other side of it as well.
I think of one of the most defining moments for me was when I didn't have to introduce myself as a DJ all the time and when I didn't have to tell people how great I am because it seems really weird. I was actually playing myself down because I didn't know the magic combo of having a third party testimonial, especially when being presented as an entertainer in a big arena at a bigger price point. So for you and why I say that for you guys, how does that feel if someone is to give you a third party testimonial to be on your show or give you a third party testimonial about your show. That's what we're talking about. And an example of this for me came when I could got a third party testimonial is a video from a gentleman named Vishen Makiani, who's since become one of my really good friends, one of my best friends, and he is the owner of Mind Valley. And he gave me this video testimonial. It's very moving. I loved it. It was like one of the nicest, sweetest things. I actually didn't even know he. He was thinking that. But when he sent me this testimonial and I was able to send that out to people, it was so much easier to ask for on my price. It was so much easier to step into that bigger role that I love to play in a big event. And I tell you guys this because that third party testimonial, and we're going to go over some examples on how to do that, is so crucial to helping you not feel like you're bragging about yourself. It makes you so much more at ease. And a lot of times, and this is one of the caveats, a lot of the times people love to give them for you. Don't forget that part. That's actually one of the gifts about a third party testimony. And we always think it's hard to ask for it, but today we're actually going to talk to you and teach you how to do that.
Yeah. Because it might be uncomfortable to ask for that testimonial or ask for that person to introduce you, but how much more uncomfortable would it be if you are really introducing yourself? And I want to put a different person in kind of the. The storyline here. To give you another example, Sam, who's your favorite musician in the world? In the world. All time musician.
You.
Me. Oh, wow. Okay. Someone else who's someone that's like, super famous.
Oh, I love the Foo Fighters. I love Michael Jackson. Okay.
Yeah, let's use Michael Jackson. Yeah. I think we all have a really good image of just like his swag and his personality. Like, he's just obviously got like.
Hilarious. So imagine Michael Jackson is introducing himself before the first show, the first song of his entire show. Of his entire thing.
Yeah, yeah.
Just like imagine he's like introducing himself. Like you're hearing his voice already, but it's not like the bang of the song. He's like introducing it. Like, it like an introducer would. Yeah. Of himself. It just is. We, like, I need the build up. I need the, like the drum roll. Like, I need that tension to actually be built before I get to see the performer, before I get to see the lights come up and he's like holding that pose or before he's, you know, about to like, strut across the stage and what's the first thing that he's going to say? Right. It becomes so much more impactful. You're like, you're on the edge of your seat. You're wondering what's going to happen? How is he going to come out? What is his entrance going to? And so that's the exact energy that we want you guys to have inside of not only your podcast episodes, but inside your life, inside the way that you are walking around and making introductions and meeting people. So do not be that person that is going above and beyond introducing yourself. The other side of it is, have you ever met someone like that? It's like, okay, hi.
However, we are going to now give you a really cool frame to give to someone because we do this a lot. We're like, hey, how do you want me to introduce you? Right? So we want to coach you really quick on how to tell other people to introduce you. And this is a super fun exercise. I love doing this. And there's two different. Two different examples I'm going to give you guys real fast. So let's use me as a dj, right? So a lot of times people would say, okay, Sammy, what do you do? They would ask me or they'd ask somebody else. How would it sound if someone asked Ray, hey, Ray, what does Sammy do? And Ray said, oh, Sammy's a dj.
Yeah.
Sammy's dj. I don't know what else to say.
Terrible.
I'm just trying to get to the point and make it clear.
Here is what we suggest you give your perspective person that's going to help you be the third party testimonial, the person giving you the third party testimonial. So, Ray, when I'm at events, how do I make you feel?
How do you make me feel?
Like when I'm performing at an event, what happens?
Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, you just amplify the entire energy. You are up on stage, you're dancing, you're grooving, and no one wants to stand still when you're performing. Like, everyone's ready to just be in that vibe. Being that energy, that's so crazy.
Sometimes I don't even notice that because I'm performing. Would you mind introducing me in that way? So if someone's like, hey, what does Sammy do? Instead of being like, oh, he's a dj, could you just say, actually, if you've ever been to an event where people just can't sit still, they're looking around to see, where is this music coming from? Oh, my God, that is the dj. Can you introduce them and say that's why they bring Sammy in?
Yeah, absolutely.
So see what I did? I Just gave her the frame on how did I make you feel when I did such and such. Same for you guys in the health and wellness space. Hey, how did I make you feel when you solved my gut issue? Oh, you did awesome. Do you mind just telling the audience or telling us how you felt in my third party testimonial? So that's one small frame. Can you think of another example like that I did it for music. How would you do it for maybe like, Betty Murray, for example, Menopause Mastery.
In what context?
How would you introduce Betty as a third party testimony? Because you know, you love her. She's a sweetheart, she's so smart, and she just gets it instead of being like, oh, she's the host of Menopause Mastery. Let's do. We're gonna do. We're doing it live right now.
Yes.
How would you do that for Betty?
So for Betty, I would say Betty's just such a caring Mormon, and she really is so clear on having the right skills to help women that are in their 40s get through menopause and I think their 40s and 50s to get through menopause and feel supported and loved and taken care of during that huge transition in life.
So much better than. Yeah, she runs the Menopause Mastery show. Yes. I love it.
And it's just tuning into how does it make you feel? And I think it's. It can be so authentic and, like, even there, I needed to pause it and reconnect with Betty. Okay, what. How does she make me feel? And so I think it's a good thing to note that, like, you. It's like you're setting up your wingman. Right. Who are you going to these events with? Who's going to be there by your side while you are meeting people? Of course, if it's your partner, whether that's your lover or your business partner or your best friend or your fiance or your fiance, then have this conversation with them on the way to the gig, on the way to the event, and it'll support both of you. I can guarantee it. And another way that you can do it is also by having a co host. So, of course, a co host can be in this more traditional sense where Sammy and I are really co hosting this show. Of course, we do some episodes separate, but we do a lot of them together. But it can also be co hosting when you have a guest come on and you can prep them and have them be ready for that too. Of course, you, as the podcast host, you're probably already doing that for your guest. So the thing that you want to remember to do is, does your guest know to do that for you on your podcast, on your episode? And that will change the whole me, right? That will change the entire episode. A lot of times we see our clients, they bring in guests, and then they're just shining all the light onto the guests, and it's like, wait, this show's yours? What about how you feel about it? And how are you taking their concepts or their ideas or the strategies? And how do you use it? And so that really helps, I think, balance out that light that can be shared both ways. And I don't think anyone's going to have a problem with that. People love sharing the good vibes.
Yeah, they love. And there's another episode that we recorded on not letting people take your time. And this is that great framework on doing that. And just to reiterate, guys, just to make this easy, one of the things that is super fun to do with this is to practice with your loved ones. Practice maybe with. Even with your kids. If you have kids, something pretty crazy to do is just introduce them in the third party way. Yeah.
And, yeah, it can be outside of business. Right. You can just do this for fun. This is the groove master. And did you know how good he is at making the best pancakes? You can just have fun with it and play with it and.
Okay, I want to do you.
Okay.
So I'd say, have you guys ever met somebody that completely melts you? They're so kind. They get it. And then on the other side of it, there's just like this sharp edge to the business acumen, and you're like, whoa, that person is sharp and with it. And then they blow you away with their creativity, their music. So they're like this renaissance woman. Yeah, that's this one right here. Wow.
Cinema. Can we blush?
So that's the power right there, right? It can make. Makes a good vibe. I think we should actually probably do this every day.
I know, baby. I don't know. Keep asking about this.
Can this be, like a part of our morning routine? Can we just introduce each other back to Rafa?
Back to Rafa. Yeah. Have you ever met a kid so wild that you don't know if you can convey their energy? But they're so damn cute, and you just can't figure out why you let them crawl out of the prison ten times at night? That's our son. Yeah.
Yeah.
So there you go.
There we go. Okay. Challenge for you guys is to practice this. Do it with the loved one, do it with a friend or a family member, see how it goes. And then, of course, bonus challenge is to actually do this, implement this inside of a podcast episode. We'll leave it at that, you guys. Yeah, have fun doing it. Let us know how that goes and we'll talk to you soon.
Totally. Leave us a message or a comment inside of our channel here on Spotify or in Apple and let us know how that went for you. Love to see some of these third party testimonials. All right, see you guys next time.
