Episode 8 Creating Binge-Worthy Health Podcast Episodes
14 Mar 2024 · 14 min
Hosts Sammy Taggett and Ray present the "BINGE" method — a five-step framework for creating binge-worthy podcast episodes that hook listeners and drive action. BINGE stands for: Bring attention to one pain/problem; Insert an emotional story; Name the pain again; Give a path forward; Empower listeners to take action. They dissect a JJ Virgin YouTube video about her hysterectomy as a concrete example, give editing/social-clip tips, and close with a CTA offering podcast audits and resources in their show notes/resource center.

Welcome back, guys. We have something so exciting to share with you today. This episode is the essential framework that we use with every episode with all the shows. We try to really hammer this home because if you use this framework, you will have a fail proof way to get your listener hooked, excited and empowered to take action out of your podcast. And this is is a method we call the binge method that I made when we did our in person day with Lisa Sasevich. Shout out to Sassy.
We love you. We love you.
Okay, so what we wanted to do was create something that sticks in your mind. And what do you love to do when you listen to a podcast or a Netflix show or when you watch a Netflix show or do anything you want to binge listen or binge those episodes. And so our framework is called binge. And what does binge stand for? I'm just going to lay it out real quick. Ray Ray. Perfect. And then we'll go deeper into it and we actually have a video that you can watch from our girl, the Queen of hooks, Ms. J.J. virgin. We're going to actually dissect one of her videos for you just to let you know what we're watching and the example you can take with this method. So binge stands for bring attention to a pain or problem. I is going to be insert an emotional story. It can be yours or someone else's. N is going to be name the pain again. G is going to give them a path forward and E is going to be the empower them to make change or empower them into a solution. So I'm going to let you start that off, I think with B. Is that cool? I think pink is yours.
Let's start it off. And yeah, a lot of times people come to us, clients ask us, how can I get better at storytelling? And we think if you have a framework such as this, and we truly studied some of our favorite Netflix shows to come up with this and if you have this framework in place, then that will allow your storyteller to come alive. And so that's what we really see in JJ and a lot of her episodes and videos that she puts out there. And so we wanted to dissect this one. So going into this YouTube, which we will have the link in the show notes for you to check it out. It's about how I prepared and recovered from my hysterectomy, the full story. So again, if you want to listen to this podcast, then go check out the video from jj. You'll be able to really see what we're talking about. So B, starting with B, bring attention to one pain or problem. And instead of multiple pains or problems, which is this unclear way forward. So if you bring attention to one pain or problem, we see this in JJ's video because it's a really simple clarity point that the listener can know immediately whether that video is for them or not. So for her, she talks about, I went in for a simple check in and it turned into a simple procedure. Then multiple. And basically this episode is for anyone that is struggling with a hysterectomy, whether they're about to have that procedure and go on that journey, or maybe they have already and they're in the recovery, it's very clear right from the start, right from the get go, that that is what this is for.
Yep, absolutely. And the I, which was insert an emotional story, yours or others. JJ has this magical way of sharing stories that hook you in. And this story and this YouTube link, you'll hear in this video, you'll hear there are a myriad of different stories where she talked about it was a simple routine, and all of a sudden that turned into one checkup after the other, one checkup after the other. And you could feel how frustrating, how harsh that would be. But she just inserts that emotional story. So you, as the audience listener, want to know what she did. Especially if you're trying to recover from, in this case, a hysterectomy, you're going to want to know what she did. You're hooked with those stories. And she has these emotional hooks that she tells throughout the video.
And then we go into N, which is name that pain again, address that one problem or pain again. And continuously throughout this video, she is sharing the difficulties that she had on the journey. And so even as someone that has not dealt with a hysterectomy, I'm already hooked because it's such a great story that she's sharing with in that emotional way that I'm actually thinking, do I have a family member that has gone through this or is about to can do, I should gather this information so that way I can share. And that's a pretty powerful hook, right? If you are pulling people in that aren't even necessarily personally attached to that pain or problem. But of course, you can imagine if I have gone through that or if I am going through that, of course I'm going to be even deep, more deeply hooked. And so she continuously shares her difficulties. But it is really interesting because halfway through this video, she actually says, now this is what the hardest Part is she went into the hardest part of the hysterectomy, which you're thinking, I thought you already went through all these difficulties. There's something more. And halfway through that is where we actually see listeners drop out of videos or podcasts of listening when they're, okay, I've got the information. So if you can actually insert that hook. So you already inserted the emotional story, but on end, you're naming that pain again, you're reinstating it. And so she, this is the hardest part. Now let me tell you the solution that I had to get through this hardest part. So immediately, if you're thinking, okay, I already listened to half, you're like, okay, I have to listen to the rest of this.
And we love the show Ted Lasso. And you see this happen inside that. And what we notice is there's a point where you think that nothing can fix it. And you're like, oh, my gosh, everything's so bad. And that is where she. The G part of this really comes to life. And that is to give them a path forward. The G give us the hope. The G spot, whatever. The G in binge is where you give them the path forward. And in this video, what JJ did is she really has empowered the listener. She's given us a way out by really talking about the supplement stack, the exercise routines that she was using. But she really gives you as a listener, a way to find a way out of all this pain, especially if you're trying to recover from what JJ was recovering from in this. And she's giving you all these options, all of these tools that she's used, even some supplement stacks that she's used as well. And that is G, and that's give them a path forward.
Yes. And then E to close it off. She does such a beautiful job with this, which is empower them to take action. So now you've already heard her story. You've heard the pieces of pain. You've heard actually the solutions as well. But the listener might be sitting on the other side thinking, well, I can't do that. How does that relate to me? And so the last step is to really empower them to take action. And so that's where she starts actually sharing, here's what you can do today. Here's what you can download today. Here's why you should go for it and. And do this today and take that action. And so she inspires by sharing how quick her recovery actually was and how simple it was. And then she shares what she did after the recovery, to really solidify the recovery and make sure that she wasn't sliding back into a state of healing or extra trauma. So often once a surgery happens, you can get up and moving too quick, and then all of a sudden you have to, you know, go back into recovery. So she shares, this is exactly what I did, and it was amazing. And you can see her whole body, her energy, her voice lights up again because she's sharing how great it was. And that is the. The piece around empowerment because she ties it in with inspiration. And then she finishes with saying, you have got to get your strength training routine because that is what will help you recover. And so watch the next video where I go into what your strength training routine can be. And here are the freebies that go along with that next video. And boom, binge time. It is activated. You're hooked. You're like, okay, I gotta go check out the video. I need to download the resources. And you know, that next video is not gonna stop there. She is for sure going to turn on the binge method again. And that's how this is great for JJ in her show and her business. But also, what else is it great for? It's great for the listener because if you don't have all these steps and you don't have the inspiration to actually take action, then what are you doing just listening to a podcast. And as the podcast producer or host of the show, what are you doing? Are you here to just create something entertaining? No. You're here to create a transformation and a change, and that's why we love working with health and wellness entrepreneurs, because this is important stuff. People need to know this information, and I can guarantee you they're not going to get the information for how to heal, how to grow, how to transform in one episode. They need to continue on and see the full picture so that way they can be inspired and truly transform their health and their lives. As the podcast episode host, this is your responsibility. So I'm getting really pumped up here.
You got so pumped on it.
Yes, I'm so pumped. Because this is the power that you have as a podcast host is to truly transform someone's life. And you have to use techniques like the binge method to really move someone deep into transformation.
So good, honey. And on a really cool editing tip for you, when you're making shows with this framework, you can tell your editor, AKA podcasting, if it's us or your editor that you're using at each part of this framework. Hey, at the be where I really Am bringing attention to this problem. I need a clip from that. And then you can go to a My emotional story. I need a clip from that. So they know how to find the clips that you can use in social media, and you can do it with three or four of those. But if you can give them the framework, it's so easy to make those viral clips using the binge method. So that is so good. You took that home.
Important stuff here. We're not just making fun, fluffy, fluffy episodes.
No, we use this in all of our shows. And honestly, we will forget sometimes when we create shows not to do that.
And you can tell.
You're like, oh, man, we didn't have a framework or a formula.
Our best episodes are when we use this.
Absolutely. So, you guys, I know that you're going to need a guide and an. And. And an empowered thing to do out of this. So make sure you go in and you check out JJ's amazing video here, but also follow JJ. She's got some incredible, absolutely incredible videos on health and wellness, specifically for women over 40, and she is the absolute queen of telling stories. You learn from the best, Elisa Nichols, and it shows because she hooks you in. But go there, check out JJ's thing. And I believe that we'll also have some stuff in our resource center for you guys to check out as well, so you can stay linked up, understand the binge network or binge method, and maybe take that, put that in front of your computer and put that in front of your setup. So when you record, you know how to stay on track with the binge method and really take people on that journey. Take your listeners on that journey.
And if you're curious and feel like. Well, I kind of feel like I do the binge method in my episodes, but I'm not sure how do I utilize this method even more in my podcast? Well, what can they do, Sammy?
