Episode 008 -"What are our Family Core Values?"

A conversational video episode featuring Adam and Alison Sand discussing family life, parenting a newborn (Atlas), running a remote business, and the importance of intentionality and core values (integrity, intentionality). They reflect on work-life balance, webinars as lead-generation, event logistics (roofing conference), and early parenting experiences in Hawaii.
Chapters
We're going to the roofing process conference every year. It's always stressful trying to sort out the boot and trying to sort out big giveaways of the shirts.
I saw this thing where it's like, instead of a baby shower, all of your friends come over and bring bottles of wine, and they just. They do all the nesting things that you can't do because you're pregnant.
Welcome to another RVP learning experience. This is a chance to learn and grow your business. The webinars are, like, my number one activity because it is a way for me to generate, you know, 50, 60 leads a day. This is, like, one of first. Cool place was actually my second year here. See where that window is?
Yeah.
I stayed right up there. So that's where Capilli put me above the barber shop.
Hi, I'm Alison Sand.
And I'm Adam Sand.
And this is building the Sand Castle. After traveling the country for two years, we settled here in Hawaii, where we welcomed our first son, Atlas.
With 20 employees working remotely, we had to go to market with a completely new product and service offering in order to keep growing the business and create stability for our family.
But it hasn't been easy, and we wish that we could see our heroes on their hardest days and experience the.
Lessons as they learn them, because social.
Media only tells a story after they've made it.
If we believe in ourselves and that we might be someone else's hero someday, then we owe it to the future entrepreneurs of the world to document our.
Story, even when it's vulnerable.
If you're at the start of your entrepreneurial journey, then follow along with us and share in the experience. Foreign to the roofing process conference we've been every year since it started. We actually helped start it every year. It's always stressful trying to sort out the booth and trying to sort out the giveaways of the shirts and trying to figure out who's going to be there and how they're going to get there and where they're going to stay. Always just this big thing that, like, causes me a bunch of stress and drama because Allison and I got to figure it out. We have people who are responsible for marketing, people who are responsible for sales, people are responsible for operations. So this year, I'm trying to say, okay, you guys, figure it out. I just want to fly there, show up, talk to people, shake hands, kiss babies, talk if I have a breakout session or a stage thing, and otherwise, just show up and connect with the followers and the fans and the customers and Be at the event. The only thing we got to make sure we're doing. Alice is having some trouble being creative on the shirts for roofing process conference. I originally assigned them to her. We probably need to give that back to the creative team. Just to say, come up with something. I don't want to have to be involved with making sure that that's marketing's problem, that's rev op's problem, that's operational problem. It's not a CEO thing. But it always comes back to me. It's not that crucial. I mean.
Yes, I do know what you mean. And also. Okay, so that's one thing that I wanted to clarify.
Really just trying to get me from being super hands on with everything in this, in the business. Like there's just some stuff that can happen without me and should. I have a Zoom? I vote 25 minutes. But is there anything you need me to do? Make coffee. Like, make a coffee. Okay. And so little things like this make her happy. And happy mom will deal with lack of sleep a lot better than not happy. Supposed to shake this because it comes out like weird. You don't shake it.
Oh, you're making a good coffee.
Well, I can't guarantee you that.
Not curious?
No. But it's that machine plus some vanilla, plus some oat milk, so hopefully you like it. You want me to take them so you can drink your coffee? I got 16 minutes. Well, no, actually, I gotta be on my warm up right now, so I gotta go. Welcome to another RVP learning experience. This is a chance to learn and grow your business. You're coming here, you're spending an hour with me. If you're on the east coast, it's like 7 o' clock at night. You know, you could be eating dinner, hanging out with your family. I just had a baby. I know what it's like. You can be doing a lot of things. You're here. So set your intentions. The purpose of this course is to teach you why CRM implementations fail. What you can do about it. Why it constantly happens to roofing companies where they go wrong.
Mom life is good. How's mom life for you? Love it. Love it. Way more than I thought I would. That's good. I just kind of thought like I would just put him in his snoo.
Oh, hello.
Hi, Flavi. I thought I would just put him in a snoo and just work all day. Turns out that's not quite the expectation. Yeah, it's a little bit more work than that. I saw this thing where it's like, instead of a baby shower, it's like all of your friends come over and bring bottles of wine, and they just. They do all the nesting things that you can't do because you're hung. You're not. You're hungover because you're pregnant. And so I was like, that is probably the best idea ever. Like, way better than a baby shower because, like, you don't want to sit for four hours while everybody is, like, giving you gifts, and then you're awkwardly opening them and being like, oh, thank you. You know, like, come and clean your house, take your tasks, and, like, get it done. Because it's like you wish you had more energy to just clean. You never want your baby to see dust on your sports. Thank you guys so much for sharing, and we'll see you on Wednesday.
Thank you, everybody. The webinars are, like, my number one activity because it is a way for me to generate, you know, 50, 60 leads a day, sometimes twice a day at the same time, help the industry and help our customers and help our success teams and train my people. Because when the people that work for me attend these courses, they learn how we communicate our value, how we help our customers, what my answers are to questions. And then they can start to answer the questions without me having to sit them down in a classroom and say, so when a customer asks this, you say this. They just get to learn by osmosis. So these are the most valuable thing I have ever done in the business. I should have done this years ago. Have you given any more thought to that conversation we had about, like, the family vision and mission and kind of running our household a little bit better?
I think my core value for life is always going to be integrity. It's like doing what you say you're going to do. Honesty, trustworthy, integrity is kind of like, all the same thing to me.
For me to, like, really be proud of my life, I have to live a little more intentionally with having a family, because it's not like I'm a 20 year old. This is something that God brought into our lives when he did. I'm 39, almost 40. Right? Your age is not mentioned on camera, probably, but why? I don't know. Just wasn't sure if I was allowed to say it.
I just look so young compared to you.
You do. You're. And you're so beautiful. But the. The point is that we're not children having kids, so we get to have the emotional maturity. Like, I don't get to be 20 and look at my Kid, like a little doll, you know, like a 20 year old might. I also don't wonder what would happen if I didn't have a kid because my whole life was ahead of me. Like, my whole life ain't ahead of me. I know, right? So you're not funny. But so it's like. So then that means that I. What I need to do, what I feel like I need to do is be very intentional about being a father and being very intentional about being a husband. Because you don't have that much time list. I understand that. Yeah, I don't have that much time left. You get one comment on a video about how you made a funny joke and now you just want to be Sebastian Maniscalco on camera. Just. You just want to get the comedy.
No, I'm hilarious.
Yeah, you are so funny. Just make a bunch of old man jokes. I just want to make sure that I'm way more intentional about being a parent because I have the opportunity to be. Because I have the calmness, I have a feeling of certainty. I have a feeling of, like, when the shit hits the fan, this will not be the end. You know what I mean? How are we going to react? The different challenges, when he gets his heart broken, when he gets hurt, when he gets bullied, when he gets good grades, when he wins a gold medal. How are we going to help him have the kind of character that we would be proud of? And then how can we also be like, how can I be the best husband? How can you be the best wife? Not that you aren't already. How can we be really good parents? Right. How can we be good members of the community? How can we make sure that our kid is someone that we would feel safe going to school with other people's kids because he would be a force for good around other kids. It's just crazy how to think that this is like a blank canvas and we're gonna have 12 summers and then all of a sudden his friends and the media and music and television and art and culture all of a sudden starts to have an impact on him. And more than say, we might.
I don't think that I plan quite as much as you do. I think that in this case, I just want to see who he is. I want to see what he likes, what he enjoys. You know, it's like, I don't necessarily want to fit him into a mold and be like, all right, you're gonna come across this and you're gonna need to know this. It's like, I. I just don't think he's there yet. So I, like, I'm still relishing in every single moment with him, and, like, I hope that he does big things. There's like a hope, a desire, and a wish, but it's like I'm just learning who he is. At two weeks, you want your kid to. To do better than. Than you did, but at the same time, what if. What if he just wants to play video games all the time?
Well, and then there's. I mean, you have to remember that God has a plan for him.
Exactly.
So we're not going to be able to, you know, Tower of Babel our way to telling him what we want our kid to do. He has a plan. We just have to tell. Show him how to not get in the way and how to hear God's plan for him. But you can't help but hope that he's got a plan that you're going to think is good because you just. We. We try and control everything as people. Right? So I'm just trying to figure out how to be a good dad, a good husband, and lead a family in a way that I'll look back and won't have regrets. That's what I want to do. I don't want to have regrets because I hear a lot of parents talk about that. Like, now that I see them, they're like, oh, I wish I spent more time with my kids. But then I see people who are like, oh, I wish I had, you know, I had done the work to be more prepared or to give my kids to what they really wanted. You know, there's all these things where it's like that you're just. You're suddenly now thinking and acting on behalf of someone else. Thank you for you, for, like, helping us just survive this first two weeks. It's gonna suck to see you grow.
That support in the morning just helps me get through my entire day. I'm sad to see you go. Well, I'm sad to go too. I'm so glad to have this experience with you two. It's meant so much.
Give me a hug because I really. I appreciate you.
It's been really beautiful. It's been an experience like getting to know myself after a baby and getting to know him. I wanted this for you so badly. And now that he's here, man, thank you for sharing this momentous life experience with your mom. It is. Hey. Oh, it's so beautiful. And to watch you fall in love with him. It's pretty wild. It's Something I didn't necessarily know that I wanted. Yeah. And now you have a little bit of a glimpse of how much I love you.
I've been zooming, like, on zoom all day, and I'm like, my hamstring is super sore. I was wondering, like, you want to go for a coffee or, like, just get out of the house? I got to move. I just got to get out of here. Yeah. Okay. We bring Alice. Put him in the car seat.
Are you going to leave him?
I'm sad.
Were you going to leave him?
Well, I didn't think we were going to leave him, but we never left the house without him, so I just didn't think we were.
Yeah, no, we'll take him.
Okay, we'll take him. Perfect. All right, let's rock and roll.
Peppermint is of the same family as catnip. Really? Yeah. So what peppermint does to humans, apparently it's amplifi what catnip does to cats. But obviously catnip is quite a bit.
It's methamphetamine.
Yeah. Because I've never. I've never drank a cup of pepper tea in one.
Batshit.
But it's a minos and invigorating.
Yeah.
I guess that's what, like, heaven does. I wish dogs had, like, something.
Baloney.
Hot dogs.
Hot dogs.
Hot dogs.
He's still wigging out. Every time you open the fridge, he's like, the hot dogs in here. One time. One time, a hot dog fell out, and I got a little hot dog. And I just want to know if there's more This.
I think I'm just gonna do a double shot latte.
Yeah. Can I have a 16 Dawn Patrol and a 16 Tiger Spice? Anything else? Double shot of espresso for him. Oh, yeah. This is, like, one of the first cool places, actually, when I stayed here my second year here. See where that window is?
Yeah.
I stayed right up there. I had those two suites, like, those two rooms right there, but. So that's where Capilli put me, is I stayed up there above the barbershop. It's the first time we've ever had to take him on the rain. But he got startled when that drop of water dropped on his head. But he stayed sleeping. It's actually really nice to actually get out of the house and have him be so good. Like, this is a big relief because it's nice to be able to get out. See, why, especially for your last day during Christmas, like, getting to see Christmas in Hawaii. How cool is that?
And just how Iconic this place is. Yeah, they like, they changed. Wahooa.
Yeah. This really did, like, kind of ignite this side of the road in Waiwa and make it nice. But just to be able to go out and know that he's okay and he's going to sit here, he's so.
Well behaved in public, so I still.
Think it's the coffee I gave him and the Xanax before he left.
It's not funny. That's why I said Adam's dad humor is hilarious. Well, when you're the only one laughing.
At your joke, there's a bunch of moms around. It's neat that his first Christmas is in Hawaii. And I love that in Hawaii, they decorate and they decorate with, like, the same decorations that we're used to with the. All the pine and the wreath.
How about the flocking on the tree?
Yeah. The spake snow on the trees with the. With the palm trees blowing in the sun and wind. Even to see the. The pond like the trees. Like, that makes you think of home.
Yeah. And there's nothing like a baby at Christmas. It's probably the first year in a long time that I've been excited for Christmas. That's also tough with, like, me being not in the company right now. He's taken over all of the HR and the hiring and all that. So then that weighs on you mentally and emotionally, and that takes like a battery toll as well.
I think that one of our core values is going to be intentional. Right? Be intentional. I think that something that I would want my kid to learn is to be intentional with how you spend your time. Because I think that we could get more done as a family, as a business owner, as a CEO, and as a husband and father if we just be more intentional about everything that we're doing. But we've really let the chaos seep into our lives and allow us to get undisciplined with our health, with our personal lives, with our relationship with each other.
You know that bananas are a grass, mono podium or runners. I think that, like millies nowadays, millennials nowadays, we really like access, not ownership. It's like we want access to. Of the pool and the house and all of that. We don't want ownership. It's like, I don't want to deal with fixing it.
