Our Natural Home Birth Experience - Episode 006

This YouTube episode features Adam and Allison Sand describing their natural home birth experience and the early days postpartum while simultaneously managing their remote business. They recount Allison's labor (including a pedicure episode, home pool birth, and emotional bonding), the family's adjustments (sleep, parental roles, help from family), and business pressures—webinar performance, product/platform sales, founder-led sales challenges, and lead-gen advice. The tone alternates between intimate family narrative and practical business coaching.

The webinars are absolute hit. We've had a lot of people getting a ton of value. We had so many people asking so many questions. It was a lot of fun. We're sending out the videos, we're sending out emails, we're doing outreach, but we have no appointments today, no appointments on Monday. So we're on the HOPE plan.
Hi, I'm Allison Sand.
And I'm Adam Sand.
And this is building the Sandcastle. After traveling the country for two years, we settled here in Hawaii, where we welcomed our first son, Atlas.
With 20 employees working remotely, we had to go to market with a completely new product and service offering in order to keep growing the business and create stability for our family.
But it hasn't been easy. And we wish that we could see our heroes on their hardest days and.
Experience the lessons as they learn them.
Because social media only tells a story after they've made it.
If we believe in ourselves that we might be someone else's hero someday, then we owe it to the future entrepreneurs of the world to document our story.
Even when it's vulnerable.
If you're at the start of your entrepreneurial journey, then follow along with us and share in the experience. The birth was awesome.
Yeah, it was really beautiful. It was a very beautiful experience and it was nice to be at home and not be in some kind of like very industrial hospital, really.
The music that we had playing and the dim lighting, it was just. The whole environment was just so good for Alison.
So I went to the midwife appointment on Saturday in Haliba, and I went in and I was really discouraged because on Saturday it was 40 and three. I was frustrated and tired. They let me know that I needed to book a massage appointment and book an acupuncture appointment and maybe go get a pedicure. We decided, you know what's easy, to get into a pedicure. So I called, went to Ala Moana, which is the world's largest outdoor mall, and I was not feeling very great and sat down in the pedicure chair and like I had two contractions, pretty painful, but not anything too, too bad. And then I had a third contraction and I knew I almost shot out of the chair and like, I think everybody else in there also knew. And I had this like 19 year old girl kind of like staring up and smiling at me and I'm like tears rolling down my face, like crying silently because I'm in so much pain. And yeah, sat through an entire pedicure appointment.
And we got here when they left, I. They didn't call or tell me or let me know that this whole thing was happening. So I'm in my living room.
I didn't want to stress you out.
I was halfway through my burrito, halfway through a scribe that I've been meaning to get to my team for a while. So I go outside, and I just hear, oh. I'm like, okay. And so I'm like, what's going on? And they're like, oh, she's having construction. She can't get out of the car. I'm like, why didn't anybody call me? Did anybody call the midwife? Like, oh, yeah, we called her. They told her to get something to eat or, like, to go for a walk, but she can't go for a walk. I was like, give me the phone. I called, like, this is for real, like. And they're like, yeah, no, it's good. We're coming. I'm like, you're too calm. She's on the couch. Our doulas gets here, and they start taking care of her. But it was really cool when they got her relaxed and they got her in the pool. And I remember when it went, and she was just kind of hanging her arms over the pool, moaning, going through that whole thing. And then there was a moment where they said, yeah, your baby's gonna come. And you said, yeah, we're just gonna get this baby out. You kind of, like, just committed and your body. Shortly after that, like, she switched to the. For, like, the pushing, and it just. The baby just squeezed out, right? And it was like five pushes and she was done. And it was. It was so crazy how easy she made it look. The. The whole pregnancy process was really filled with a lot of guilt about everything that she was eating or whether or not she was working too much or whether or not she was stressed walking enough, whether she was walking enough. You know, constantly feeling like she just wasn't doing pregnancy right, worried that, you.
Know, other people did it differently and other people were better.
You know, that she was supposed to sit in some Zen state and do yoga every day, and she did so good. And this baby comes out, and the midwife is just like, reach down. Grab your baby. Allison had some, like, euphoric, spiritual connection thing that happened. She reached out, she grabs her baby was like this really beautiful, natural experience. There we go. It's really tough going back to work after having a baby so quickly, to just being right back to the same workload. I feel bad when I hear the baby crying, and I know that Allison is just doing it all by herself. I mean, she's handling it really well. But it also means that I only get the times where she's at her wit's end. The baby's just in a mood and just crying. And I essentially just go into baby calming mode, which makes me feel good that I get to do that. But it's like 8 o' clock at night, walking around in the backyard in circles of my, you know, skin to skin contact just to like chill him out. And I wish I got more of that connecting time. I mean, we've been sleeping in different places just so that she's not waking me up and I'm not waking her up. And we're doing it so we're not getting as much time to connect. It's probably gonna be like this for a little while. We have the launch still ongoing targets to hit. You know, employees counting on us, you know, careers that are counting on us, customers that are counting on us. So it doesn't stop just because we had a baby. There's no maternity leave. Hello, everybody. Who's here? We got some people joining. It is Winning Wednesday. Everybody should want to show up and win on Wednesday. Oh, we got some thumbs up. Right on. We got some action for those who don't know Winning Wednesday. What we do, we share our wins and then we share our struggles. And I will personally work through counseling, coaching, consulting you through that process through the lens of identify the constraint, find out what works, do more of it, do it better, then do new things, focus on things that are easy to do and have a high impact, and work our way down from there so that we can always be effective as leaders.
Oh, look, Jim, got a question.
Okay, let's hear. Jim, Congratulations on the baby. Thank you so much. Man Atlas is super cute, super cool first kid. I'm learning new stuff every day, so how can I help? So kind of two parts. Would you ever put on a roof before the supplement is complete? And do you have like a general time frame for when you should give up on a supplement? Unless it's causing the customer stress that might impact the reputation of the company. Let's preface it with that because again, we want to get more customers, make them worth more, and de risk the business from this happening in perpetuity. So supplementing allows us to make customers worth more. If you have a company that's willing to fight for that, as long as you're willing to fight for that and it's not bothering the customer, hurting your brand, find it for as long as it goes like get your money right, like get as much as you can out of it. As for putting a roof on before supplementing, that's it. That's a mixed bag because again it comes down to what is the experience like for the customer. There's certain stuff that you know you're always going to get an.
Unless person is asking in terms of generating lease, you say what is easy and what gives good results for a new company? Other 2 million in a large market. What types of lead gen would you say generally falls into this category? Would you do it if you started a new company today?
Okay, perfect. That's a really good question. So if I started a new company today, I would start doing repairs and I would advertise really low numbers for easy services. I want to try and find a new customer funded acquisition. I would start running an ad that charges $89 for gutter cleaning and I would do a roof inspection every time I clean the gutter. I would use Facebook ads, super low cost services to get my foot in the door. This is like pretzels at the bar. They give you the pretzels and then what happens? You get thirsty, you order a beer and then another beer and then next thing you know you're having steak freeze.
Thank you guys so much for coming and I hope you guys got some value out of this course.
Oh, the webinars are absolute hit. Like we've been getting 70, 75% show rates. We've had a lot of people getting a ton of value. Last winning Wednesday was incredible. We had so many people asking so many questions. It was a lot of fun. A lot of people are taking a huge interest in what we're doing and we're making an impact.
Run, rocket, run, run. It's actually been really good. Way different than what I expected having a newborn would be. I mean there is some exhaustion. There's there. It's a different type of exhaustion. It's nothing that you I think could prepare for because it's like if you don't sleep while he sleeps, then when they wake up, you kind of pooched. You're like, you gotta relax as much as possible. I'm still catching some emails, but Adam has been taking on a huge load. He's absolutely exhausted because he's helping me with Atlas and he's helping me around the house.
As a parent and a husband, I feel like I have to be involved. I hear a lot about the critical, immeasurable connection opportunities that happen early in a child's development. And I want to be there for that. I also want my wife to know that I supported her through it in the moments that mattered. Nonetheless, my time taken away from the business could hurt it. So just trying to keep it all. Yep.
I am really not doing anything in the business at all right now other than just like checking emails and filing some reports and doing a little bit of approval. But the team also stepped up quite a bit to help us out.
It's really tough to do stuff without Allison working because she's such an integral part of the business. She maintains the culture. She balances me out in a lot of ways. It's times like this that any business owner has to remember their why. Because otherwise you wouldn't get through it.
Thank goodness my mom came from Canada and she was willing to come to Hawaii in November because I would not be able to exist at the moment like she is just baby whisperer. She's helping with meals, helping with groceries, helping with the baby, helping with the house.
We would not be able to maintain the high output of our lives. It was really tough sell. There's a foot of snow back home. It's Hawaii. So it was really hard to pull her out of out of there and get her to agree to come spend some time down here. What is the best. What do we bet?
I don't want to, like, bet my Ty can.
The most important thing in this whole ordeal was six months ago, we were told the due date was November 8th. And I said that how cool would be if it happened on November 11th. And then we bet each other and then what day the baby come? Go ahead, say it. Just try it once. I think we just sold a platform. I just got the notification. We got a $30,000 payment, and it looks like platform has sold. He's paying subside right now. Going on vacation for a little bit of time. Wants to know if there's anything he needs for when he gets back. Sorry, buddy. We sold a platform. You're gonna have dog food next week. What I want to talk about in today's meeting is a lot of our success comes down to getting repetitions, right? Like just trying to sell this new thing. So I look, we're sending out the videos, we're sending out emails, we're doing outreach, but we have no appointments today, no appointments on Monday. So we're on the HOPE plan. We have the brand, the reputation, the industry expertise. If I, as a roofing business owner, could go to a consulting firm and say, I want to double my revenue in a year, I want you to guarantee it I want you to give me the system in which to manage it. I want you to give opportunities for me and my team to get educated on a daily basis. And I want you to check in on me every single month and make sure that I'm working towards my goals and that I have a personalized opportunity to see where the constraints and opportunities are in my business. I would easily hand that person 30,000 and 2500amonth. I would make that decision and purchase today. Where we have to master is how the order in which we can communicate that to our customers. And I can only teach so much because I every time I get on a call I'm the guy in the video. I'm the guy that stuff I can speak in a different way so I can teach you to do it the way that I do it. We have to do it using frameworks. And what I need to see is more appointments getting booked. Five to eight appointments should translate into one or two deals. I had meetings today with both my director of revenue operations and in our daily sales standup talking about what we're going to need to get me out of founder led sales. The problem with founder led sales is that I can say certain things in an opportunity with a customer that my team can't say. It's not that they can't say the words but when I say that I designed this business because I felt it to be something I could live with if I both sold the tool and helped them hike the mountain that was like the enterprise level sale. Now that we're doing more of a one to many group approach, all those kind of word tracks still work. But the problem is I won't be part of the deliverable and I need to develop a sales system for my business that will help my customers feel confident in their ability to work with us. By working with our MDRs and our AES and our customer success managers and our Revops consultants and our technologists and ultimately leaving me to just do the webinars. And we're trying to figure this out and ultimately make the business work. These webinars are huge for us because it's going to be things that you can ultimately send your customers and eventually these will be the training modules for Atlas and platform that is going to create duplicative effects thing from a digital well being too. Everybody is to get good at managing your slack like putting in there like when you're working when you're not. If you've gone to the gym and setting your notifications to do not disturb at certain points in your life. So if you set your Do Not Disturb settings up and use that tool, someone can send you something without interrupting your time with your loved ones and stuff like that. The three biggest decisions you're gonna make in your life is who you marry, where you live, and what you do for work. And your work will impede on that. And so learning how to keep those things in harmony with each other is important to your success and happiness here. So I want that to make sure you guys do take that priority. But everybody's got to get to their meetings. Thank you guys for being here. Have a wonderful day, everyone. I am super tired and learning a ton about being a dad and a husband.
Adam has been working around the clock to support me as I stepped back.
I practiced with sleep deprivation for years, but I wasn't prepared for this. And honestly, watching Alison, she makes it look really easy, and I know it's not. Allison is completely winning at parenting and wifing, and I feel like I completely failed.
I think that every moment is the greatest moment. And the new discoveries are really cool, too, like where he does something a little bit different.
Our Webinar today has 70% show rate. That's unheard of. This is working.
