Adam Sand says the best salespeople come from structured organizations like the military and police, where they learn to follow processes, or from ex-business owners who understand operations. Both types fit hierarchies and excel at sales.
As a sales manager, what's the good place to find good salespeople?
This has gotten people in trouble. But military, police, people who are used to that structure, that discipline, they follow a process and they work within a system. They lead up and down the chain of command. So they fall into the ranks really well. Ex business owners. Because they come in and they're like, you're telling me that you paid for the chairs, the computers, the paper, the printer, the marketing, the advertising, the product, and I got to come in here and just talk to people or product that they want to buy, and you're going to be 25 or 5%. You got to pry them out of there with a crowbar. Any ex business owner that goes to sales, they typically do really, really well at it.
How do you recruit them? How do you find those?
I would say they come to you. You're going to say the marketer thing. We have to run good hiring ads. The other two are drug dealers, and people are good at the opposite sex tag. Your boss, he needs to hear this.
