Be Unimpressed: The Necessity for Wisdom & Discernment of Spirits

A sermon on cultivating biblical wisdom and discerning spirits in a flood of information. Using Solomon's judgment over two mothers as a model, the speaker argues that truth emerges when you test a spirit, not when you're impressed by charisma or emotion. Pray for resistance to superficial influence and apply this discernment to everyday decisions.

Today I want to talk about the necessity for wisdom and discernment. And the reason for that is, is because there's a lot of information that is being presented to us via the news, via other people here on YouTube, via articles, journalism, in our churches, everything. And we need to make sure that we are executing God's wisdom, the wisdom of the Lord, and the gift of discerning of spirits. And you should be able to, as a believer, use them both at the same time, especially if you have the fear of the Lord. And one person in scripture who demonstrated this very well, who used both of them at the same time, is King Solomon. And in 1 Kings chapter 3, verse 16, it says, then 2 prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. The one woman said, oh my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house. Then on the 3rd day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth, and we were alone. There was no one else with us in the house. Only we 2 were in the house. And this woman's son died in the night because she lay on him. And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while your servant slept, and laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast. When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead. But when I looked at him closely in the morning, behold, he was not the child that I had borne. But the other woman said, no, the living child is mine and the dead child is yours. The first said, no, the dead child is yours and the living child is mine. Thus they spoke before the king. Then the king said— listen to this— the one says, this is my son that is alive and your son is dead. And the other says, no, but your son is dead and my son is the living one. And the king said, bring me a sword. So a sword was brought before the king, and the king said, divide the living child in 2 and give half to one and half to the other. Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, oh my lord, give her the living child and by no means put him to death. But the other said, he shall be neither mine nor yours, divide him. Then the king answered and said, give the living child to the first woman, and by no means to death. She is his mother. And all Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered, and they stood in awe of the king because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice. Now, one of the things I want to point out to you Is that there were 2 women who were claiming that the son was theirs, and there was no way outside of the discernment of spirits to discern what was the truth and what was the lie, who was telling the truth and who was telling a lie, outside of the wisdom and the knowledge of God that could have been given to King Solomon to make a righteous judgment. He didn't just go off the whim of whoever looked Or seemed more convincing about what they feel like is the truth that they were sharing. He made a righteous judgment based on wisdom and the discernment of spirits— who was telling the truth, who was lying. And he tested their words by putting into action. What did he do to test their words? What did he say? He said, bring me a sword. He tested the spirit behind what both of those women were saying. And whenever you begin to test a spirit, one of the two things are going to happen. The truth will be made manifest, and the person who's lying will begin to tell on themselves. So it is important that in this hour that we test spirits, that you test everything that you hear, even what I'm saying in this video. Okay, test it. If you don't— if you're not 100% sure that the spirit that you're seeing in operation is from God, you have a spiritual responsibility for your own life according to the Spirit of God to test the spirit to see whether it is the truth or a lie concerning any word concerning any prophecy, concerning any word of knowledge, concerning anything. You have a spiritual responsibility to test and try every spirit to see whether they are from God or not. Now, Solomon could have been very easily impressed by the woman who had so many details about, you know, what happened in the midnight hour and all of these things. He could have been very easily impressed by her, but he was not. He tested the spirit. He didn't believe what they said. He tested it to see. And he knew that if he tested it, because he was executing wisdom, because he didn't just jump the gun to believe everything that was presented to him, he tested the spirit to see who was telling the truth and who was telling a lie. And we should be doing the same thing in our life every day. So the way that you discern a spirit to know whether it is from God or not is to one, pray and ask God for you to stop being so easily impressed by everything that is in front of you, by people who are so good with their words, by people who are so charismatic and seem so powerful and seem so good at what it is that they do. You have to pray and ask God to help your heart to stop being so easily impressed by everything that is placed in front of you. Because King Solomon won't easily impress. He tested the spirit to see which one of these mothers was telling the truth. He didn't just go based on who has the more convincing story, the more compelling story, who can pull on emotions the most, who can drag you in by sensationalism the most, who can make you feel like the child is theirs. No. He tested the spirit, and as a result, everyone around him marveled at the fact that he made a righteous judgment. And what was the key to his righteous judgment? The wisdom of the Lord and the gift of discerning of spirits. He used both of them at the same time. At the same time. He was not easily impressed. He wasn't easily provoked. He didn't respond out of emotion, because for some of you, that's what you're doing in this hour. You're listening to people telling you things in your own private life even, and you're quick to jump on their side, and you're quick to rush to their rescue without consulting with God. And it's so dangerous because you haven't tested to see whether what the person is saying is true Or not. This is why when people come to me for counsel about anything concerning marriage, I don't hop on the wife's side, I don't hop on the husband's side. I'm on the side of God, which is the two of y'all together as one. What is God's purpose and plan for that? And the reason I don't do that is because that's not the wisdom of the Lord, and that's not called using the gift of discerning of spirits. Which is what the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to do. You know, so we really need to make sure in this hour that we are utilizing the wisdom of the Lord. And the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom. So if you're lacking wisdom, check your fear of the Lord, because you need both. You need the wisdom of God, and you need to get the discerning of spirits. After you discern the spirit, you need to be able to execute wisdom. You have a spiritual obligation and responsibility to navigate this in your own life. It's not just to be used for the exposure of the church or the exposure of wickedness. It is to be used in your everyday life concerning you first, concerning your family, concerning how you navigate All things in your life. It's not just for the exposure of the church or the exposure of wickedness. Wisdom and the gift of discerning of spirits. Start with the fear of the Lord if you don't have neither one of those. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you grow in fearing the Lord. Find scriptures, do a word study, find out what it means to fear the Lord and live in that. Every single day so that you are not deceived. You need both. This is the necessity for wisdom and the gift of discerning of spirits. One of these days I'm gonna do a teaching on idolatry, uh, whenever the Lord releases me to do that. But for now, be blessed, people of God.
