I almost got run over by GoPro's CEO

Transcript of a conversational interview (Oct 2011) between Robert Scoble and GoPro CEO Nick Woodman discussing the GoPro HD Hero 2. Topics include hardware upgrades (sensor, processor, lens/field-of-view), photo/video capture modes (burst, time-lapse, 3D), Wi‑Fi streaming and remote/control accessories, pricing, and anticipated availability (winter). The tone is promotional and enthusiastic.

127° (mid wide angle)
10–11 megapixels per second in a 10 photo burst
Foreign. This was never communicated.
Sensor's gone up from 5 megapixel to 11 megapixel. The processor is twice as powerful. Can now capture full 170° 1080p. Where before you could only capture 127° mid wide angle, now it's full wide angle and 1080p. You can capture 10, 11 megapixels per second in a 10 photo burst. You can capture 11 megapixel photo every half second in time lapse mode.
Can you set a specific timer to go off at a specific time?
Yeah, half a second, One second.
Because that's how my friends were shooting the space shuttle. They set it to go off at 11am right when the shuttle was going.
Well, as we're about to see and as many of you are seeing online, the film that we made with the HD Hero 2, the opening scene scenes are shot in time lapse mode. So those are 11 megapixel time lapses that just look amazing. And overall image quality is more than two times. The lens is twice as sharp. When you look at the footage from the HD Hero 2, it's on a totally different level. So what we try to do with this film is to go global, show you this global experience of people around the world doing these amazing things. But mainly that they're smiling, high fiving and hugging because they're sharing their experience with others. And that's what this device does. This device lets you capture and share your life's most passionate and exciting moments and share them with other people. And I'm shaking because I'm so pumped up right now because this is so awesome that we just finally got this product out.
The GoPro camera is like what, 2 inches long by 1 inch by 1 inch? Something like that.
It's. Think of this as a little module. It's the world's smallest professional HD capture module. But you can go buy it at your local surf shop, ski shop, best buy for $299 and create your own professional productions of your life.
And people are doing remarkable things with these. I've seen them. First of all, you can get a 3D kit so you can hook two of these together. Right. Does that still work with the new cameras?
Yeah, it's a firmware update we're coming out with very shortly that'll enable you to take two GoPros and stick attach them together with synchronization cable to shoot 3D. You could set one camera to shoot 11 megapixel photos and set the other camera to shoot 1080p video and be doing dual capture at once through the one joint unit. And it's just one more way it's super versatile is you can actually take two of the same camera and combine it to form a new type of camera.
I've seen them hooked up in an array of 48 of these GoPros so that people can do the Matrix style.
Totally. Yeah. Time slice, bullet time. Yeah. And we believe that.
Are you gonna sell that as a K?
I want to do the same thing. We're using it more and more in our own productions and we've got the ESPN's and the discoveries of the world asking us to come and shoot with them so that we can bring our array. So there's definitely a desire for it at the professional end. And again, it's just a way you can form a new camera by combining multiple GoPros together. Right. And another thing we're really excited about is the HD Hero 2 enables live streaming to the web and over Wi Fi, right? Yeah, over WI fi. So virtually anywhere you have a WI FI connection, well, there's a WI FI network you can stream. Coming later this winter, when we release our WI FI backpack, you'll be able to stream live from your GoPro to the web while you also record to the camera. So you'll have a dual stream.
Now, the WI fi is not hd, Right?
You will be able to stream WI FI hd. Yeah.
Wait a second. Because you're engineering guys, I know that.
The potential in the camera is there. It really is a network load issue. So the camera can do it. It's just a question of how strong is your network, how strong is your signal, how big is your pipe. Another thing that the. So it is. We're going to get there. Another product that we're coming out is a WI FI remote, which is like a little key fob that you'd have for your car. And you'll be able to control up to 50 GoPros simultaneously with the one remote. And that sounds like a lot of GoPros, but we have a lot of professional production customers that have 50 GoPros on a set. And one of the things they told us is it's a challenge because they capture so many different perspectives with so many different GoPros that they have so much data that if we could make it easy for them to control those from one remote, it would be huge. But it's just as awesome for the grom that's going snowboarding or surfing and wants to control their camera and not have to reach for it.
Yeah. Now, if I was shooting Mavericks out here because, you know, in half in bay we have these 60 foot wave contests and I have, you know, a GoPro on the surfer and a GoPro on my boat and all that fun stuff. I'm supposed to be on the press boat this year, so we'll see.
Load it up with GoPros.
Load it up.
We'll do it with you.
Do I need a WI FI network or can I do ad hoc? Can I do WI fi?
Well, for streaming anywhere, you've got a WI FI network or you've got a mobile hotspot. Yeah. You can do video streaming directly to a smart device, be it a smartphone, a tablet, what have you, using a free GoPro app that we'll provide and so that you could use your smart device as a remote video viewer so you can see how your camera's set up. You can see what you're recording as you're recording it on, off. Full camera control and then some. We're going to unlock new things in the camera and whatnot. But if you want to bounce it to the web, get it to the web, you have to have either a mobile hotspot or a WI FI connection.
Great. How much is the price?
Same for the HD Hero 2 is $299.99. The original HD Hero dropped today to 199. And the Wi Fi remote combo kit that we talked about is going to be 99.99.
And that's coming later this year.
Yeah, this winter.
You're going to deliver one for Santa this winter?
We're working hard on it. It's awesome.
This winter means maybe next year.
We're working hard on it.
We'll see you at Consumer Electronics show in January.
You got it, man. It's going to be fun.
Well, thank you so much. Get it all@gopro.com right you GoPro do.
We're stoked to hear from you and see from you.
Thanks, dude.
All right.
Hold on, hold on. Okay.
