In this episode of the Face Forward / Inspiring Change podcast, host Scott McInnes interviews Lisa Melody, Head of Leadership Development and Talent Acquisition & Development at Ornua, the Irish dairy cooperative best known for the Kerrygold brand. Lisa outlines Ornua’s business model – a cooperative with food and ingredients divisions serving 110 countries and pursuing the €3 billion ‘Renua 2021’ growth strategy. She shares her 25‑year HR career across banking, telecoms and now food, and describes her dual role overseeing talent development and acquisition. The conversation delves into what makes a great leader: authenticity, humility, a measured ego, charisma, and a ‘lead‑from‑behind’ style that empowers teams. Lisa explains how an entrepreneurial culture is fostered through autonomy, risk‑taking, and a high‑trust environment where ideas are acted on quickly and failures are learned from. She discusses engaging leadership – focusing on the team, providing clarity, direction, and stretch, and the importance of vulnerability and humility. The role of leaders as communicators is explored, emphasizing transparency, storytelling, and the need for both top‑down “big‑brush” messages and local translation by line managers. Lisa describes Ornua’s major transformation programme, Project Evolve, and the challenges of communicating across a highly distributed workforce (250 staff in Ireland, 2,200 globally). Communication tools include an intranet called The Parlour, newsletters, town‑halls, notice‑boards, and digital screens, chosen to suit varied audiences. Building pride is linked to Ornua’s cooperative purpose, iconic brands like Kerrygold, and a strong culture underpinned by four values – With Heart, With Vision, With Drive, With Thought – which are embedded through development programmes, 360‑feedback, psychometric hiring tools, and recognition schemes. Lisa cites leadership role models such as Nelson Mandela, Joe Schmidt, Aidan O’Brien, David Duffy, and internal leaders like Roisin Henerty. She concludes with advice to her 20‑year‑old self: focus less on self, seek solutions, learn from surrounding leaders, and be attentive early in one’s career.
