#83 - Dont Like The Rules? Dont Play The Game
28 Jan 2026 · 4 min
Jeff Watson and Luke discuss how car dealers can avoid deceptive advertising complaints from third-party sites like CarGurus and Carvana. They argue dealers should build their own websites and brands instead of relying on lead marketplaces, and explain how to track where leads actually come from.

All right, Luke, Happy Monday, buddy. Hope you are geared up for an awesome week. We got a great episode coming up with Sean. We touched a little teeny bit on some deceptive advertising practices. And I know that that's been the real hot topic in some of the online forums and groups the last couple of weeks. People are complaining about gurus and cars.com and these guys are selling my leads here and there and they're boosting Carvana's exposure to my clients and giving them this, that and the other. Here's the problem. And this is, this is my issue with the whole thing is you didn't build the damn website. Stop complaining about how it's run, right? Like it's their game and they set the rules. If you don't like the rules, don't play their game. Right? I mean, it's looks like my dealership or even my home. Like I set the rules of my house. You know, my wife and I, we decide what's going. It's not the kids, it's not the kids saying I want to do this, that and the other. It's not. And your employees, you're going to take their input and you're going to maybe tweak a couple things at your dealership. But guess what? My name's on the sign, My name's on the note. I fronted the money. If you don't like the way Cargurus works, then you collect $2 billion and launch yourself a national campaign and get the eyeballs to your website. It just, it baffles my mind. Give them input, fill out their surveys when they send them to you. But to sit and complain and complain and complain and complain about the way things are done, I don't know, man.
You know, it's a double edged sword. You know, so many dealers believe they need these third party sites. And when you give you, I mean, some of you may need to read your, you know, go ahead and read your disclosure you, you put in there. But I'd be willing to bet you that you agreed for them to have all your information and it's not your, not their lead.
They got the customer to their site because they're using your money to put their name on national television and drive people to their dot com. They're not stealing it off your website.
No. And that's not it. Yeah, that's not a lead steal. Now I'd be willing to bet you Carvana is paying them a lot of money. I'd be willing to bet you that. And if you want to Pay them as much as Carvana, then they'll probably give you Carvana's lead. Yeah, yeah, that's true.
You're going to be the preferred trade in place. And whatever corporate connection they have up the ranks, they're financially tied to each other. I get it. But again, guys, the bottom line is they created the game. They create the rules. If you don't like the rules, don't play the game. Build your own website. Build your own brand.
Build your better mousetrap.
Yeah, build a better mousetrap. But if not, then just pay the bucks and take the leads. And again, go back and listen to episode 40 and episode 28 or whatever they were when we talked about tracking your lead source. If it still makes sense for you paying Guru six grand a month because you're still selling enough cars to make it pencil and do it.
If you work your leads better, I promise you, you'll sell those Carguru leads. And if you work them better than Carvana does, you're gonna sell them better than Carvana. So it all comes back down to normally, leads come from knowing how to market your cars better and how to be more personable than Carvana. And if you can do that, I'd be willing to bet you can outsell them, even if they're getting your leads or getting the leads that you think are yours from cargo brewers.
Amen. Luke. Tax season's upon us, man. I smell it. We're thinking earned income distributions or disbursements from the IRS are coming up this weekend or next.
They should start Monday. I should start today.
Really? Okay. I'm ready, man. I'm itching. I got cars stacked on top of cars over here.
Hopefully you too, buddy.
All right, have a good week.
See you.
