In this Hidden Brain episode, host Shankar Vedantam interviews Stanford psychologist Laura Carstensen, the founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity. The conversation begins with Carstensen’s 1974 car crash, a near‑death experience that shifted her priorities, exposed her to elderly patients, and sparked her lifelong interest in the science of aging. Carstensen describes how early research in the 1980s portrayed old age as a period of inevitable mental‑health decline, but large epidemiological studies showed lower rates of psychiatric disorders among older adults. Her own work, using daily‑experience sampling and later laboratory experiments, uncovered the "paradox of aging": older adults report fewer negative emotions, experience a positivity bias in attention and memory, and maintain smaller but emotionally richer social networks. The underlying mechanism is a shift in perceived time horizons – as people age, they perceive less future time, prompting a re‑prioritization from exploration toward emotionally meaningful goals (socioemotional selectivity theory). Carstensen discusses experimental manipulations that induce a short‑time horizon in younger adults, producing the same positivity effects, and the reverse – extending perceived time for older adults, which restores exploratory preferences. The interview explores practical implications: how understanding time‑horizon psychology can guide choices, improve well‑being, and inform policies for both young and old, including fostering present‑focus, forgiveness, and adaptive goal setting.
