Shelly Rood describes five markers that signal when you've hit a wilderness situation, where normal procedures stop working. If three or more markers are present, you're not failing, the situation itself is unwinnable. The first two: no map (no formal procedure exists) and no training manual (no guidance for operating under investigation while performing normally).

Wilderness situations are unwinnable scenarios where the standard playbook does not apply. It's where the map ends and you're still expected to keep moving. And the worst thing you can do in wilderness is try to solve it with tools that were built for a totally different kind of terrain. So here's how you know if that's where you are. There's five markers, and here's your rule. If at least three of these are true, you're not failing. You are in the wilderness. Marker number one. No map. There is no procedure for clearing your name inside someone else's mind. There's no regulation that governs an investigation that outlasts the course that it's investigating. There's no HR protocol, no chain of command process. There's no form you can fill out that clears a false perception once it's been locked in. The institution has processes for guilt. It does not have processes for innocence. Marker number two of this being wilderness. No training manual. Nobody trained you for what it feels like to be formal, investigated while ordered to perform normally.
