In this short monologue, Shelly Rood argues that both gratitude and anxiety arise from the same region of the brain—the hippocampus—and therefore occupy the same mental "room." Using a visual metaphor of a 10 × 10 room containing a 10 × 10 ball representing each emotion, she claims that the two cannot coexist: if anxiety is present, gratitude cannot be, and vice‑versa. Consequently, she suggests that by consciously cultivating gratitude one can replace the experience of anxiety, even while the external stressors that trigger anxiety may remain unchanged.
