A leader who creates real momentum doesn't become the bottleneck. Instead of hoarding information with a need-to-know mindset, ask who else should know. Judge success by your team's forward motion, not your personal wins.
Chapters
Real momentum continues without your constant presence. If everything stops when you step away, then you haven't built momentum, you've built a bottleneck with yourself at the center. So here's your action for this week. In your next three important conversations, practice asking who else needs to know, not who has the need to know. That's the control mentality. And as a former intel officer, I totally get it right. Everything's on a need to know basis. But if you're looking for genuine collaboration outside of confidential documents, then we should be asking who else needs to know? And when thinking through that question, take an honest inventory. Are you measuring success by your individual accomplishment or by a collective momentum? Because if you're working harder but you're not getting any further, or if you feel like maybe you're still carrying everything alone, if you're operating in this sense of isolation and you just feel like there should be other people along with me, well, I hear you.
