Suffering from a need to lead | Others Over Self™

Shelley explores the Army value of selfless service and why some people compulsively volunteer to lead. She shares how her friend Kim turned down a leadership role, making Shelley question her own habit of always stepping up. Sometimes the greatest impact comes from serving as a follower, not a leader.

Hey friends, Shelley here. This is an interactive video designed ultimately to help us serve others the best we can, focusing on the theme of selfless service. This is an Army value that I've always loved, and now I'm upholding it in my civilian life, really as a mindset for daily living. We're talking about pouring from an empty cup. You can't do it, can you? So here's our activity. When I say go, it's your job to think of 3 organizations that you're serving or even that you belong to, and you only have 10 seconds to do it. Okay? So identify 3 organizations in 10 seconds. Ready? Go. Now, of those 3 organizations, Are you serving in a leadership position in any of them? Maybe all of them? Let's think for a moment why that is. A few years ago, my good and highly capable business friend Kim, she turned down a leadership position. I couldn't believe it because her skills, her talents, her abilities, they were perfect, and she would have brought such an immense amount of value to the job. Yet at the time, they didn't fit in with her personal and professional goals, so she turned it down. You can do that, you know. I'm telling myself more than anyone, I'm looking around at the groups that I serve and I'm asking myself, Shelly, why do you always have to step up into a leadership position? Another good friend of mine recently pointed out that maybe it's because this is actually an ego or a control issue that I have. You see, when we allow others to lead, we also allow the outcome that we no longer control. Maybe you're like me right now, just feeling highly convicted about the need to always take the lead. And our lesson here is that true leaders focus so that we can make a greater impact. And if you found yourself on the other side, struggling to come up with this list of organizations that you serve, Well, here's your sign: reconnect with your community. I'm Shelley, reminding you that the needs of others will always be greater than your own, and sometimes being a supportive member or follower is serving others the best we can. See you soon.
