The Relationship Bucket List | Others Over Self®

Shelly Rood walks through the Relationship Bucket List, a 30-minute exercise where two people each suggest four activities they want to do together before one of them dies. You set veto rights and avoid high-risk activities to keep it real.

Hey everyone, Shelly Rude here with a quick selfie video. I'm looking at the calendar and realizing that Mother's Day is this weekend. If you're like me, it creeps up every year and my mom usually ends up with whatever I could get last-minute shipping on. Can I say that? Well, not this year. My mother really is a blessing in my life, and if I were honest, I would tell you that I didn't always see it that way. She loves to just sit down and chat, but that's not really my style. So I've come up with a way that we can grow closer together without it feeling like so much of a burden. I did just say that. So we're calling this solution the Relationship Bucket List, and here's how it works. Choose the person that you want to grow in closer relationship with, then schedule out 30 minutes together and create a list of things that you would like to do together before one of you kicks the bucket. How long should the list be? Aim for 8 items, 4 that you propose and 4 that the other person proposes. And then, you know, what if that person wants to do something that you're just not comfortable with, right? Well, let's go ahead and feel free to set some left and right limits, like each person gets a veto vote. Or the events are standalone only, so you're not roped into a monthly commitment. Or decide against activities that either party could consider high risk, like skydiving. So what if your mom says that she wants to take you shopping for shoes? Ugh. And you know, maybe your spouse wants to take you to the shooting range. Just go do it. It'll mean a lot to your loved one and you'll both be operating in a safe space. So that you can feel free to actually enjoy their company. Serving another by devoting your time to them, that is a priceless gift that everybody should appreciate. I'm Shelli Rood saying Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. Keep being awesome by serving your children because the world needs your efforts. See you soon.
