Shereene Idriss explains why charcoal scrubs can make blackheads worse: irritation triggers more oil and chronic inflammation. Use abrasive scrubs no more than once or twice a week. Charcoal masks work better to draw out impurities than charcoal face washes, which irritate without delivering real benefit.

Blackhead Erasing Charcoal scrub. Is it 2002? Overusing a blackhead charcoal scrub might not be the best thing for you if you have blackheads. Why? Because in the process, you might be irritating your skin. When your skin gets irritated, you're going to make more oil. When you make more oil, you're going to get more blackheads. But worse, if it causes chronic inflammation, your skin is never going to get happy. So the biggest thing that I've seen in my practice with people who use this is that they go wrong and strong. And the reality is, if you're going to try to use this, you have to limit it to one to two times a week because it is abrasive in the form of a scrub. I much prefer a charcoal mask if you're looking to draw out impurities. And you can limit how long you leave it on your face. But with a face wash, you're probably not getting the full benefit because you're washing it off right away and you're probably irritating your face in the process. So, no, I'm putting it back. I'm putting it back. I'm putting it back. I'm putting it back. Let me know if you have questions.
