Shereene Idriss explains why you can't trust cleanser labels. A product marked as a polyhydroxy acid might still contain glycolic or mandelic acid, stronger exfoliants that can irritate sensitive skin, especially in summer. Always read the full ingredient list.

Here's why it is super important to understand the ingredient list of the products you're buying and not just base it on the front. I just came from CVS and I bought this cleanser thinking it was going to be good for sensitive skin. It's an active cleanser. It has polyhydroxy acids in it, meaning that it has exfoliating acids that are better geared towards sensitive skin because they're not as aggressive. But when you look at the active ingredient list, there is also glycolic acid in here as well as mandelic acid, both of which are alpha hydroxy acids and some of the more aggressive forms of exfoliating acids, especially glycolic acid acid, which by the way, I love. But it's not great for sensitive skin because they're relatively low on the ingredient list. I'm not so worried, but if you're very sensitive, I would avoid and it's probably a better exfoliating wash, especially for summer when the sun is much more aggressive, the UV index is higher and you might be more sensitive to the sun.
