Welcome back, little nerds. It's Saturday morning, so get ready to get your pens and papers out because we are getting nerdy old school style and we are going to be doing an ingredient deep dive by popular demand from all of you guys. You have been requesting to understand a particular ingredient better, and I'm talking about glutathione. Before I jump in, who the hell am I? I'm Dr. Shereene Idriss. We do this thing every Saturday morning at 10 AM where we try to learn together, to grow together so that you can better help yourselves. So make sure to subscribe, like the video, let me know below what you want to learn more about. But glutathione specifically is an ingredient that has started to really take over social media by storm because it falls at the intersection of 3 massive trends. Number 1, there is this shift from anti-aging towards cellular health that is currently taking over not just the beauty space but the wellness space in general. And glutathione itself is also known as your body's master antioxidant. Allowing your cells to perform at their highest level and really giving them all of the boost that they need to do so. Number 2, the beauty from within trend. And I'm talking about the supplement trend where everybody's trying to find a supplement to better themselves in the long run. Glutathione promises you to brighten your skin, to give your skin an inner glow, and it's something that seems very aspirational. And so a lot of people are turning towards it in terms of a supplement. And the third trend is the K-beauty trend that we cannot ignore because K-beauty has taken over our lives. And particularly within K-beauty, the idea of brightening your skin and evening out your skin tone is a huge pillar for what they stand. And glutathione has been part of that movement for a very, very long time. So in a sense, in 2026, I feel like glutathione has become the new collagen of sorts where you're seeing it literally from the inside out and the outside in. And it's going to start dominating, I think, conversations when it comes to skin care. Today we're going to talk about glutathione in skincare specifically, what it is, what it does, how it works, how we should incorporate it into our routine. And after understanding all of that, you're going to understand why I myself decided to reformulate my own vitamin C moisturizer, the Major Fade Active Seal, now with glutathione. But this video is not about my brand, although we will talk about my product towards the end alongside other products as well, and why I liked glutathione so much that I decided to go down that rabbit hole of reformulation. So get your pens and papers out and let's get nerdy. So what exactly is glutathione? It is known as a master antioxidant because your own body makes it, which is absolutely wild. But more so than that, it is made up of 3 amino acids. Number 1, glutamine. Number 2, cysteine. And number 3, glycine, making it technically a tripeptide, which you've probably heard of. And honestly, if they've marketed glutathione as a peptide, I think it would have skyrocketed and boosted way faster than what it has. But its main true function acts as an antioxidant. Plus, it is also known as a vitamin regulator. So what exactly do I mean by this? Its primary job is to help neutralize any damage that is formed by oxidative stress, and that oxidative stress results in free radicals— tiny little, the radicals that want to ruin everything, which I'll get into in a second. So it's going to help to protect your cells, but more so than that, it is also part of the detoxification pathway, helping to recycle other antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E. So topically, it's going to act like an antioxidant on and within the skin. Before we get into the exact mechanism of how it works, let us touch on antioxidants because I find this topic to be confusing to many of you. And I've gotten— I've received a lot of questions about antioxidants in particular, and I think it's important that we understand the importance of it. It does not have a sexy name like peptides does, But your skin is exposed to environmental stress every single day. Forget about internal stress. I'm talking about life, you name it, pollution, world, the steam coming out of those weird potholes in New York City. You don't know what you're being exposed to, but you're being exposed to a lot. And when your skin is exposed to this, it undergoes oxidative stress, which results in something known as a free radical. Crazy little guy, unstable molecule that basically wants to wreak havoc in your skin. So let's think of a metal pipe, for example. Oxidative stress will rust your car, right? It's going to start forming more rust on your car, but you can never stop your car from aging. We all know this. We're all going to age. Anti-aging is a myth. Nothing is going to stop you from aging. However, you can slow down that damage. You can slow down the rust that appears on your car and think of antioxidants as that protective coating that is going to help to prevent that rust from forming earlier on. So oxidative stress is one reason why we start to look duller, uneven, inflamed, more prone to discoloration, more tired, and it can also contribute to premature collagen breakdown, earlier on and over time. So antioxidants are going to help to neutralize, basically meaning block, those free radicals, grab them in their crazy state and calm them down so that that damage doesn't show up as visibly on our skin and on our faces. Antioxidants are not going to replace sunscreen. They're not going to replace retinoids, but they are an essential support for our skin to live everyday life so that we can have skin longevity in the truest form over time. And this is especially important when you're talking about aging and you're talking about discoloration because oxidative stress does result in premature aging, aka collagen breakdown, and does result in discoloration because it is connected to how pigment is produced. And now that we understand why antioxidants matter, let's talk more thoroughly about glutathione. So I'm going to explain in a stepwise fashion how glutathione works, because once you understand how it works as an antioxidant, you're going to understand how it brightens your skin. We just covered how oxidative stress results in free radicals. Glutathione is going to come and coat those free radicals to minimize the inflammation and the havoc that it's trying to cause. And in the process, it's going to help with your pigments. I apologize, I live in New York City. If you're hearing some hammering in the background, that's what that noise is. But it's going to help to calm that down so it minimizes not only how your melanocytes are reacting because there's less inflammation around it, but it's also going to minimize the collagen breakdown by nature of it being an antioxidants. The more interesting thing about glutathione is that it likes to work alongside other ingredients, other antioxidants specifically, like vitamin C. And so your skin has an entire network of antioxidants living within your skin, helping your skin stay resilient over time because it's your largest organ and it's your number one defense when it comes to your health. And so these antioxidants work together to help to support one another so they can work more effectively over time and more efficiently. So think of it like a basketball team with one player being vitamin C and one player being glutathione. It's passing the ball to one another. They're not— there's no single star person on a team. It's really the team that's the star. And so they work together and they really do help to keep your skin's defense system functioning at its most optimal level. Now, this is where it gets super interesting because the same oxidative stress that damages your skin also stimulates pigment. And when melanocytes are exposed to that inflammation and that oxidative stress, they become much more active. And that's why you see sunspots appear much faster when you're exposed to UV rays as you get older. And when you're stressed, that's why your melasma wakes up, which I just spoke about. But one other way that glutathione can also help to brighten your skin is not just indirectly by having that reduction in oxidative stress, but it's also going to work on your pigment pathway. Reduces your tyrosinase activity. It also interferes with melanin synthesis and it shifts the type of melanin you make. So melanin is the pigment we make and eumelanin is the darker pigment that exists and pheomelanin is the lighter pigment that exists. So it shifts from eumelanin to pheomelanin. And so now we have two potential effects on which it helps with brightening your skin. One is the indirect effect through oxidative stress and reducing those outcomes and really helping to neutralize the free radicals. The second is by interfering within the melanin pathway. So it helps to brighten your skin, not because it is a bleach like some people like to assume things are, not at all, but because it's helping to minimize the damage that is contributing to your melanocytes getting reactivated, but also by helping to shift the way your melanocytes produce pigment. So the pigment that it produces is slightly brighter in outcome and not as dark in the form of hyperpigmentation. Glutathione works best when it is in a formula, when it is married to other antioxidants. So we're going to touch on products. Number 1, we have the Dr. Idriss Major Fade Active Seal. Listen, I am the brand founder. Obviously there's a conflict of interest, but I believe in my products and we put our products through clinical testing, so it would be a miss for me not to share it with you. This is not just a vitamin C moisturizer, it is a vitamin C moisturizer with glutathione to really help to fortify the vitamin C aspect of this moisturizer. It has tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which is the quiet form of vitamin C, so you can use this twice a day, and you can use it with a retinol at night, and that is going to boost the effects of the retinol without making it irritating for you. Additionally, we don't talk about this so much, but there are other actives in this moisturizer. It also has an ingredient known as 4-butylresorcinol, which rivals hydroquinone in the studies that were presented to us by the raw ingredient suppliers. And so that means it is going to help to brighten your skin as well. Additionally, I threw in some peptides as well as ceramides to help to strengthen your skin barrier health. And the reason why this is so important for me is because why are we just moisturizing when we could be moisturizing with added benefits like brightening our skin? Because we know our skin is going to become more dull as we get older and hopefully wiser in life. This one retails for $58. I believe Sephora is having a sale. You can get 20% off when you purchase it now. I mentioned that earlier on in the video, but I will link everything below. You can get an eye cream. This one by Ole Henriksen is known Banana Bright, and it contains a type of vitamin C known as 3-O ethyl ascorbic acid, as well as THD and glutathione. So it's going to be a brightening eye cream. So if you're looking for something slightly thicker because your under eyes are a little bit more dehydrated, this is a nice way to go. But can you use a moisturizer underneath your eyes? Abso-freaking-lutely. But if you want, if you want to use an eye cream, I would suggest a thick, rich eye cream with added benefits of brightening. And that's why I specifically like this one. Additionally, if you are looking for just a serum, patients love the Allies of Skin Vitamin C 35% with Glutathione Advanced Firm and Brighten Serum. This one retails for $148. It's a combination of vitamin C and glutathione, which makes it work really well, but it might be a little bit strong if you are sensitive because it does have ascorbic acid in it and it could be very, very active. And last, we have a pure glutathione serum for the purists in the group. Do I think on its own is it great? Probably not, but in conjunction with other actives in your routine, it will probably work. But Medicube at $24 has their Age-R Glutathione Glow Serum. It also has hyaluronic acid in it. So if you're going to be using this serum, I would not have a dedicated hyaluronic acid serum in your routine because you're going to be getting it from this particular serum. But the hyaluronic acid is not going to make the glutathione work more effectively because if you watch until now, you know that you need other antioxidants for glutathione to really boost its effects and work at its highest level. I hope this video was helpful. I hope you guys understand glutathione more. If you guys want other deep dives on other active ingredients, please let me know in the comment section below. And yeah, stay nerdy. I hope you guys have a beautiful Saturday, and I'm so grateful that the construction above me stopped so I could finish this video. I'll see you guys next week.
