Milia are keratin-filled cysts under the skin that scar easily if you pick at them. Dermatologist Shereene Idriss recommends avoiding heavy moisturizers, exfoliating with salicylic acid for oily skin, and getting professional extraction or cautery for removal.

Milia are keratin filled cysts that get trapped under the surface of your skin and are quite impossibly impossible to pop. I'm a board certified dermatologist and people often talk about using vaseline under their eyes. But if you are oily or if you are genetically predisposed, meaning if you look at your family members and they have a lot of milia, I would avoid it. And if you try to pop them, like I said in the beginning of this video, they're quite impossible to pop and all you're going to be left with is a scar and post inflammatory erythema or hyperpigmentation depending on how close the milia is to your eyelid. Ways you can help yourself at home is by exfoliating more regularly, but exfoliating smart. If you're oily use salicylic acid and if you're not oily go more towards mandelic acid or glycolic acid. But the reality is you're gonna have to come into the office for an extraction where we use a special tool to pop that baby out or a hyper cater where we burn it and it involutes and disappears for good.
