Dermatologist Shereene Idriss explains why you shouldn't pop pimples in the triangle of death, the area between your nose and upper lip. Popping there risks infection that can reach your cavernous sinus and cause meningitis or brain abscess. Use warm compresses and acne treatments instead.

I have this really deep, painful, probably white head. Did you know that popping pimples on your face can actually be dangerous? Because this area on your face is known as the triangle of death. It runs from the corner of your mouth up to the bridge of your nose. And what makes it so special is that it is directly connected to a vein at the base of your brain known as the cavernous sinus. Here, unlike most veins, which have valves to push the blood forward and towards the heart, the cavernous sinus has no valves, meaning bacteria from a popped pimple or an infection in this area can travel straight back into your brain, rarely causing severe problems like meningitis, a brain abscess, or even a clot. So the next time you see a pimple in this area, resist the urge to pop it. Use a warm compress and use acne treatment instead and let it heal safely because we need to protect your face and do not pop your danger zone. Your skin and your brain will thank you.
