Five tips for smoother skin from a board certified dermatologist 1. Ditch the physical exfoliants Physical exfoliants are abrasive. They're going to break up your skin in a non specific pattern and that is going to lead to worsening of inflammation, micro tears on your skin and worse worsening of your texture in the long run. When washing your face, do it at night, but more importantly, get the makeup off. So here's a tip. Do it on a dry face. All you have to do is prep the wash in your hand with a little bit of water, work it so it can get a little bit foamy or non foamy or activated and then go into your face, breaking up your makeup as you go. Ideally you're using one that's gentle enough to be used around the eyes so you can have a little bit of a peep show while you're washing your face. But the best part is to use a soft washcloth. Not all washcloths are created equal. You do not want one that is abrasive but a soft one. Wet it with warm water and allow it to gently lift all of the face wash off of your face and the makeup off.
