How to use retinol if you have sensitive skin A old school demo. If your skin is sensitive, you want to layer products underneath your retinol. And if you're super sensitive, save it. As a last step, go in first with your serum, followed by your moisturizer, and last with your tretinoin or over the counter retinol. The serum and the moisturizer will act like a buffer which will minimize the effect of your retinol or prescription. But that is what you want because you are sensitive.
