John Vlastelica argues that "misalignment" is the primary obstacle to achieving both speed and quality in recruiting. He emphasizes that alignment across hiring managers, interview teams, HR partners, and recruiters must be actively driven (it won't happen automatically). While some hiring managers proactively lead alignment, many do not, so recruiters must be skilled not only at sourcing, screening, and closing candidates but also at facilitating team alignment.

Misalignment is the root of all evil in recruiting misalignment. I want to highlight it again here because the single biggest challenge to getting speed and quality, in my opinion, is not around sourcing. It's not around how much we pay. It's misalignment is when people are not on the same page. So we have to be great at driving alignment. Alignment doesn't just happen on its own. Now, you may have some hiring managers that are fantastic. They work really hard to make sure you understand the work and you have a very collaborative relationship. And they're actually leading the conversation with you with their HR partner. You know, they're aligned with their boss, they've talked to their interviewing team without any assistance or leadership from you. They're just. They're on top of this alignment thing. They get it. But many hiring managers are not. And I don't know if they really appreciate how important it is that they play a role with us in driving alignment across the team. So I want to highlight this by saying that, you know, we have to be great at sourcing, screening, closing, of course. Right. But we also have to be great at getting teams aligned.
