ChatGPT is transforming the SBIR landscape like never before, bringing both new exciting opportunities but also its own challenges. And as startup founders, it is so important to be aware of these changes and to adapt to stay competitive. So in this video, I'm going to reveal two ways ChatGPT and AI are reshaping the SBIR game and actionable strategies to help you stay ahead of the curve. So let's dive right in and explore how you can leverage these new technologies to your advantage. Hey guys, welcome back to the channel. I'm Stacy Chin from KeepYourEquity.co, and our mission is to help startups secure non-dilutive funding. We specialize in science and tech startups by providing guidance on how to secure non-dilutive funding from federal programs such as those from the SBIR and the STTR. If you're interested in learning more about those programs, I'll leave a link in the description to another video below. And we also advise other private and public businesses as well as NGOs on their non-dilutive fundraising strategy by helping them to navigate the complex federal grants and contracting landscape. So if you haven't been living under a rock, you'll be aware that ChatGPT and AI are shaking up the SBIR landscape, game-changing efficiencies to startups. Just imagine effortless drafting, optimizing proposals, conducting market research in record time, and managing projects like a pro, all thanks to these cutting-edge tools. But with great power comes new challenges, and staying ahead of the curve has never been more important than ever before. So let's explore two different ways ChatGPT and AI are transforming the SBIR landscape and what you can do to harness the full potential of these new technologies so you and your startup can stay at the forefront of innovation. So number 1, due to ChatGPT and AI, several US federal agencies are seeing a much higher volume of SBIR proposal submissions than ever before. And this wave of increased submissions is reshaping the SBIR landscape in really interesting ways. On one hand, the accessibility and efficiency brought by these AI tools means that more startups are throwing their hats into the ring. And this is fantastic because it drives innovation and competition to new heights. Fostering a diverse pool of new ideas and solutions. However, this influx also places a significant burden on these federal agencies and reviewers who must sift through these at a much larger volume. And this increased workload can lead to longer review times and the potential for reviewer fatigue, especially when trying to identify the most promising SBIR application. And in return, this may place more pressure and strain on these federal agencies to dedicate more resources to to make sure they can keep up with this pace. And for those reasons, federal agencies are also trying to do their own research and learn how startup founders are using tools like ChatGPT and other AI technologies to prepare the SBIR applications. So what can you founders do to navigate these new developments? First and foremost, founders should not get discouraged about these changes. Despite the increased competition, applying for SBIR grants is still an excellent non-dilutive funding route. And this is especially true given today's difficult landscape of raising venture funding for early-stage startups. Founders should also learn how to embrace these AI tools to boost their efficiency while preparing SBIR applications. And some examples could include brainstorming ideas, conducting background research, polishing content, and much more. The second way ChatGPT and AI are transforming the SBIR landscape, in my opinion, is that there are now a lot more lower-quality SBIR applications being submitted. The ease of using these AI tools can sometimes lead to rushed or less thoughtful applications, which can jeopardize the quality and competitiveness the innovativeness of the SBIR grant. I've seen many people try to write SBIR proposals solely using ChatGPT, which can lead to generic responses, a lack of rigor in the R&D approach, and a poorly thought-out commercialization plan. And trust me, you do not want to find yourselves in this position. Also, submitting a poorly written proposal can be a waste of a founder's valuable time and resources, especially if they're not willing to give their full dedication and effort to prepare a strong application. Additionally, federal agencies are also investing significant resources, time, and attention to critiquing these SBIR applications. So it is always good to be mindful of that as well. So with that, what does that mean for you founders? It means more than ever before, it is crucial to invest the time and effort into crafting high-quality SBIR applications. If you've been following this channel, you'll know that these are highly competitive applications, often requiring anywhere from 30 to 80 hours of work just for a Phase 1 proposal. Take the time to meticulously think through your R&D strategy so that all of the details are in place. Make sure you have a good team involved, a significant problem you're solving, and all the supporting documents are there. Remember, with SBIR writing, quality will always trump quantity. A well-prepared, detailed SBIR application will always stand out amongst a sea of general applications.
