Number 4: Will venture backing weaken my application? I've heard this question all the time from startup founders. We raised venture capital, so SBIR probably isn't for us anymore. Well, news flash, that's kind of not true. Venture funding and SBIR funding are not mutually exclusive. The key is demonstrating that federal dollars are advancing critical technical risk that private capital alone isn't funding. So having venture backing does not automatically disqualify you from receiving SBIR funds. In fact, a meaningful percentage of SVI awardees have actually raised outside capital.
