Flip the F*ck It Switch: Reset, Simplify, Move Forward
3 Dec 2025 · 7 min
Steve Lichtman introduces the RISE framework: Reset, Identify, Simplify, Execute. It's a four-step mental reset for overwhelm that starts by pausing to clear your head, then pinpoints the core problem and isolates the smallest next action you can actually do.

There's a moment every business owner knows well, and it's the moment where everything feels heavy at once. The tasks, the inbox, decisions to be made, unfinished projects that are still sitting there waiting and languishing. And the things you said that you'd do but didn't. And then something small tips the scale. Maybe it's a missed deadline. It could be a comment online or from somebody or something, even internally a comment. It could be a bad night's sleep. The list of things that could. That could tip the scale are endless, right? And then suddenly, everything feels impossible. And that's when overwhelm wins and kicks you square in the ass. It's the moment, the effort switch exists for. And you know, the effort switch isn't about giving up. It's about letting go. It's that mental reset. It's your moment of stepping out of the storm so you could see the sky again, right? Like nobody wants to be buried and inundated in crap and feel like they're drowning every day. Nobody wakes up and says, man, I hope today sucks. And I feel overwhelmed all day. And I hope everything goes wrong. I hope I f up everything. I hope I miss a deadline. I hope somebody shits on me on social media. Nobody wakes up thinking like that. We all wake up, for the most part, positive. At least I hope so. And if you don't, that might be a whole other issue. The hell, that might even be underlying issues. I'm not a. By no means I am a social worker by any stretch. I can't help you there. But look, the truth is this the whole reason I created the idea of the effort switch and the course that I'm putting up on my community for the effort switch. It exists for this one purpose, because it's not about giving up. It's about letting go. It's having that mental reset, that moment where you do, like I said, step out of the storm, see the sky again. You can't think clearly when you're drowning. You can't execute when you're emotionally flooded and ruined. You have to flip a switch. At some point. There has to be that tipping moment, that small moment where you just go, oh. And flip that effort switch and go on forward and keep moving, right? So when you hit that moment, this is where the rise framework for me, looks like in real time. This is how I would use this with somebody in real time. Number one, reset. Okay, stop. And everything off the table. Let's step back, right? Let's. Let's take that reset moment to step Back and reevaluate what we're doing right now. Identify. Well, what's the actual problem here? That's always what it comes down to. Simplify. What's the smallest possible step forward? What is that one little move I can make? That one brick? We're not building a house. Remember that one brick, that one step forward that I could do right now to change my course of action and then execute? Do it, man. It's like Ben Stiller and Starsky and Hutch. Do it. Do it. Just do it. Nothing else. Just do it. Like Nike. Just do it. Swoosh. The effort switch is literally the reset in its purest form. It's just. You need that moment for yourself where you can just go, oh, and reset everything and start again. And that's what the effort switch is all about. So your riff this week is going to be simple. Even now that. No, it's not even this week, because I'm posting these far more often than weeks. I don't know why I called it a riff of the week. Honestly. I should just call it the episodes riff or the riff of the episode. I don't know. Put something in the comments. Give me a better name of the riff of the week. Because, let's be real, I'm recording 10 of them right now, and I've got all my content mapped out, and I'm going to keep calling it the riff of the week for these first 10 and then the next 10. Maybe we have a better name for it by then, because like anything, even I need clarity sometimes, right? I mean, I'm doing a lot of writing right now and a lot of preparing lately. So, yeah, even I get caught up in my own universe and have to reset and take a step back and say the riff of the week. But if I post two or three of these a week, how is that the one riff should just be the riff of the episode? So let's call it the episodic riff, and we'll come up with a better name later. Overwhelm is your mind asking you to simplify. Think about that for a moment. If you reframe the way you handle feeling overwhelmed, and every time you get overwhelmed by something, you look at that as a moment to rise and reset, identify, simplify, and execute. How much easier will overwhelm feelings be? How much easier will it be to handle that dread that comes with feeling overwhelmed? Because you'll know now you have a way to just kind of internalize it and take a step back and look at it from a different angle where you don't feel like you're jumping off the bridge and instead you feel like you're jumping through the golden magical hoop like Sonic the Mighty Little Hedgehog. You don't need a bigger plan, you need a smaller action in the effort. Switch. It's your permission slip to drop the weight and move again. So I hope y' all use it and you can go to the community.
