In this coaching monologue, Susan Britton Whitcomb explains that while traditional coaching often focuses on identifying and shifting limiting beliefs to empower clients, recent neuroscience research suggests that underlying biology should be addressed first. She argues that negative biological states—characterized by stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline—can trap clients in a downward spiral, narrowing perspective and hindering belief change. Conversely, positive neurochemicals such as oxytocin and dopamine foster an upward spiral, enhancing trust, creativity, and the capacity to adopt empowering beliefs, which in turn supports effective behavior. Whitcomb urges coaches to assess and influence clients' physiological states as a foundational step before working on belief systems.
