Susan Britton MCC explains ICF PCC Marker 7.1, which uncovers how clients think about their situation. The marker carries an asterisk, meaning coaches must revisit it multiple times in a session. Questions like "What's that like for you?" can be introduced early during agenda-setting to clarify the client's focus.

Susan with another tip on ICF PCC Marker 7.1, which has to do with understanding what the client's current thinking is about their situation. So one of the things to remember is that 7.1 actually can happen early in the coaching conversation. For example, it can help clarify the focus, the important thing that the client wants to speak about. And so remembering that the ICF PCC markers or the competencies themselves, they're not necessarily a linear thing where number 3 starts the, the conversation, although it sometimes can, but it's not 3 and then 4 and then 5 and then 6 and then 7 and 8. It's more often that those are juxtaposed. Those competencies can be juxtaposed, and you can be hitting a number of markers at the same time with just one conversation or with one sentence or one little bit of conversation. So thinking about when you're setting your agenda, which is part of ICF number 3, you're going to be asking questions around 7.1. What's that like for you? What's your current thinking on that? What does that mean for you? Wow, what does that feel like to have that? You know, what's it like to be standing in your shoes right now? So those are questions that would elicit 7.1, and 7.1 is one of those markers that has an asterisk by it, meaning you need to hit it more than one time in a coaching conversation. So ask questions about where the client is, and that will help to ensure that you hit that and do well on a performance evaluation.
