Susan Britton explains how metacognition breaks analysis paralysis by shifting your brain from pure analysis to a whole-brain state that includes your right hemisphere and default mode network. This broader activation lets your inner wisdom surface as insight, so you can act strategically instead of drowning in data.

The other thing that the metacognitive process helps with is that it stops us from getting into the analysis paralysis piece of things. It gives the right hemisphere a chance to sort of kick in because when the whole brain is functioning and not just this more analytical function, that's where insight is going to happen. The default mode network may be something that you're familiar with. That's going to get kicked in when we have metacognition in place. That's when insights can start to come, because up to this point we've been in this cognitive load, picking up more data, trying to solve the puzzle, and just getting too much that we can actually carry. If we shift into the metacognition, if we shift into what's happening within us, if we can start to hear that still small voice and access the wisdom that we have, then insight comes. Once insight comes, we can choose much more strategically what is actually going to be proactive and productive in terms of the actions that I want to take.
