Sylvie Croslard argues that leaders need to restore their identity as God's children before seeking purpose or assignments. When you define yourself by roles and others' expectations, you hear God's guidance through a distorted mirror. She draws on Jesus' pre-ministry affirmation in Romans 8 to show that identity comes from being a son or daughter of God, not from what you do.

Hello, today I want to start where alignment always begins: identity, not purpose, not calling, not assignment.
Identity, because many leaders are asking God for direction when what he's actually restoring is who they believe themselves to be. When identity is fractured, even subtly, clarity becomes difficult, not because God isn't speaking, but because he's trying— we're trying to hear him through a distorted mirror. It's something I've noticed over and over again with faithful leaders. Confusion doesn't usually come from rebellion, it comes from misalignment. And misalignment often begins when we start defining ourselves by what we do, what we carry, or what others need from us, instead of who God says we are. Scripture tells us in Romans 8 that those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons and daughters of God. Notice that order, idōli, comes from leading. Belonging comes from obedience. God does not give summons to orphans. He gives invitations to sons and daughters. So if you've been feeling unclear, hesitant, or in general lazy, I want you to hear this. You may not need new direction, you may need identity restoration. So common identity distortions, um, what are they? Let's talk about this. A few subtle ways identity gets distorted for leaders. We can become the responsible one, the strong one, the dependable one. Hands up if you've been a single parent with several jobs. I've been one of those. Sometimes we become the one that doesn't need help. The one who holds it together, the one who carries everybody else. So I've been there too, being the strong rock as a single parent. That falls into that category too, you know, when everybody else is falling in pieces, you have to be the strong one and keep everything going. Keep everything together. I've been that too. Over time, those roles start to feel like who we are instead of what we've carried. Roles are not identity. Assignments are not identity. Even an anointing is not identity. Identity is who you are when nothing is required of you. And when identity is unclear, leadership starts to feel heavy, decisions feel overwhelming, An obedience does you feel like pressure instead of partnership. And I want to ground this in Scripture. Before Jesus ever healed the sick, cast out demons, or tore the crowns, heaven opened and said, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." No miracles yet, no ministries yet, no assignment yet, just his identity. And him belonging to Yahweh. Now, if Jesus needed identity affirmed before a sermon, so do we. You're not behind, you're not failing, you're being invited back to center. And let's pause for a moment. If you can, place your one hand over your heart and ask yourself, who have I been trying to be lately? What version of myself feels tired, Where have I been defining myself by responsibility instead of relationship? There's no need to fix anything right now, just notice. Alignment begins with awareness.
Before you go, take a breath and let what you heard settle. You don't need to force clarity.
Peace will guide you.
