Right.
Chat with today's most successful entrepreneur seven days a week. And the one commonality that these successful entrepreneurs have is they know how to set and accomplish goals. Fire Nation. So check out our free eight day goals course at free goalscourse Co. And now let's chat with today's featured guest, Tanya Bubren. Tanya, are you prepared to ignite?
Yes, I am.
Yes. Tanya is a family physician, certified lifestyle and empowerment expert, wife, mother, and passionate lover of life. She's dedicated her career to helping people connect more deeply to themselves and their truth. And Tanya is a strong advocate for a holistic approach to health and well being. So, Tanya, take a minute, fill in some gaps from that intro and give us a little glimpse of your personal life.
I'm a family physician and as you said, a wellness and lifestyle empowerment coach. And most importantly, I'd like to say I'm a wife and mother. My family comes first. I have been in practice for 25 years in family medicine and it has brought me extreme joy and pleasure. Tending to people's bodies and now as a coach, tending to their minds and their spirit.
Well, this is something that's definitely been more of a topic of choice for me as far as reading, as far as researching, because I'm just really kind of big into this whole mindset, into the whole holistic world. So I'm excited to be chatting with you today, Tanya, about this and more. But first and foremost, let's get down to brass tacks. How do you specifically generate revenue as an entrepreneur in your business?
Well, I still see patients in my clinic, so that's one of my streams of income. But I've recently started running online courses. I do one called May Cause the Miracles based on Gabby Bernstein's book. And that one has been brought me immense joy because I realized that now I balance healing bodies along with healing minds and spirit.
Love that and Fire Nation. This is what's going to happen as you continue to just be more in your business, to do more, to communicate more. You're going to see different opportunities open up. And I'm sure if we interview Tanya in a year, she's going to have revenue 3, 4, 5 down the road, opening up as she's continuing to solve the problems of, of her clients when they're sharing their pain points, their obstacles, their challenges. And Tanya, you've had the journey of an entrepreneur. The ups, the downs, let's dive into the down and not just any down. The worst entrepreneurial moment that you've ever experienced. So, Tanya, take us to that moment in time.
That moment when I was so eager to get into the holistic approach to wellness that I heard about a course and I went, Invested lots of money into it and got so caught up, invested in the equipment and the supplies and brought it all back to home, to the clinic. And I hadn't realized that the market just wasn't ready. So I had all this equipment sitting there and all the supplies, and nobody wanted to invest in the new testing that I was doing. And when I really looked back at it, I realized that I as well, was not ready to integrate that into my practice. So I still have the equipment. I had to throw away supplies that expired. And it really wasn't a nice feeling throwing away stuff that you had invested lots of money and time and energy in.
So this is a tale as old as time. I mean, you know, we get excited as entrepreneurs, you know, as human beings, you know, we wake up, we say, well, wow, that infomercial was really inspiring. Or, wow, that piece of direct mail or that advertising on tv, like, fill in the blank. Like, we get fired up because we see the possibility. And it's kind of actually. There's a weird little psychological thing where a lot of times for us as humans, just actually investing, buying that thing gives us basically this feeling of accomplishment already, even though we haven't done anything. So that we just love that feeling of accomplishment. So if buying that thing is going to give it to us, maybe we just buy that thing. But a lot of times we jump in into these circumstances way before we should. So, Tanya, what do you wanna make sure Fire Nation gets from you? Just kind of jumping in headfirst and then realizing, wow, there's no parachute opening up here. I gotta figure this out. And this is not the answer. What do you wanna make sure our listeners understand before they invest heavily in something that might not work?
I would say understand the market and understand yourself. I didn't realize that. I thought that the patients would jump at the. The thought of something new to help with diagnosis and with new management. And patients were scared. They hadn't heard about it, so I hadn't marketed it properly. I did not know enough about it as well to be able to sell it to them. So I think we need to know our market and invest in knowing ourselves a little more so we could sell the product even better or sell the service even better.
So in hindsight, besides what you've already mentioned, like knowing the market. More like in hindsight, if you were to do it all over again, or not necessarily do it all over again, but to be in that same place where you took that plunge, what would you have done differently?
I would have waited. Before I invested in buying the equipment and supplies, I got caught up in the desire to help, and I guess I was sold on it by the people who wanted me to buy the expensive equipment as well. So they were hyping us up and telling us we could start right there and then, and we had all the software, and I got caught up, and I didn't step back and look at it from more objectively, so to speak. I was just caught up with everything. I got caught with the flow, and I just ran with it.
But on the flip side, Tanya, we can't just wait, wait, wait. I mean, there is a point where we have to actually take action as human beings, as entrepreneurs. What do you want to tell Fire Nation about that?
It was an immense lesson, and I learned a lot from it. And I will eventually use what I learned into integrating it into a new way of seeing my patients. So I think the lessons there are. Nothing you do is wasted in the sense that there are always tremendous life lessons from every experience, whether it's good or bad. So I learned a great life lesson. I will think twice before I invest in equipment. I will check my markets before I will talk to my patients to see if that's something they would like to have done. So I will do more research and I will step back. I wouldn't be as impulsive.
Fire Nation. Nothing in life is wasted unless you let it be wasted. So, Tanya, let's do a little bit of a shift and talk about and aha moments. One of your greatest aha moments to date. Take us there. Tell us that story.
It was when I realized that I no longer wanted to be what we call a pill pusher. I had a patient come in and wanted me to rewrite a prescription given to her by another physician for nine drugs. And while writing the prescription, something inside me shifted, and I thought, I no longer want to do this. I want to heal people. I do not want to heal diseases. And admitting that to myself was one of my greatest aha moments, because it meant that I could then look into a new way of healing people without feeling guilty. I had invested time and energy in medical school, and I felt that maybe something was wrong with me, that I no longer felt joy or I was satisfied doing practicing medicine the way I had been taught so many Years ago. So admitting that to myself was one of my greatest aha moments. And then admitting it to my colleagues and my family that I was going to look for a new way to deliver medicine, that it still bring tears to my eyes. Just that moment changed so much in my life.
I mean, that just brings shivers down my spine as well. Fire Nation. Because how can you not be moved by a moment like that? I mean, here was Tanya. She had spent so much time, energy, effort, money to become the professional that she had become. And then she had this realization that, wow, this is just not what I want to do for the rest of my life because I know deep down I can do so much more. And I even know what it would look like to. To do so much more. And so many times. Tanya, people in your profession and other professions like yours that take a lot of time, energy, effort and money to get there, they say, well, you know, my bad. You know, those decisions that I made in, you know, the past are going to haunt me for the rest of my days because I invested too much time, too much money, too much effort in all of these things. I can't change now. It would be a waste of everything in the past. In Fire Nation, that is called the sunk cost fallacy. Don't think what you've done in your past has to dictate your future. In fact, that's an incredibly sad, sad way to live. If I had let the $20,000 that I had invested in my first semester of law school dictate the next 50 years of my life, I'd be a sad, depressed, unhappy lawyer right now and I would not have gone on to do all the things that I've done.
You.
You know, not even just with Eofire, but, you know, with corporate finance, with commercial real estate, learning so much about myself, finally landing into EO fire, something that I'm so passionate about doing because I didn't buy into the sunk cost fallacy and I don't want you to either. Tanya didn't. I didn't. You don't have to either. Findation. So if you're feeling trapped because of past decisions, stop. What is it that you want to do? Have your aha moment and now wake up every day and move towards that. So, Tanya, let's now talk about you as an entrepreneur. What would you consider your biggest weakness as an entrepreneur?
I think I'm soft hearted. Very often my receptionist will tell me, Dr. Bobrand, you really shouldn't let that patient get away with this. I tend to see the good in everybody, even if sometimes everybody else is not seeing it. I like to think that there is a good part in everybody and that I am seeing it and give them the benefit of the doubt. Many times I get burned where people take advantage of me and my tendency to believe in them. But I want to continue being like that. I want to continue seeing the good in people. And yes, I'm soft hearted and yes, I am soft on people, but I don't think I would change that. Now.
There's something that I kind of wanted to dive into here like Fire Nation. Tanya knows her weakness. So what does she have? She has a receptionist who's going to hold her accountable, who's going to say, hey, you need to toughen up. Or maybe it's her receptionist is actually doing the tough stuff that, you know, Tanya just doesn't want to do. So we need to find those things that we're not good at or that we're weak at. And then we need to hire or surround ourselves with people who are good at those things. So, you know, Tanya can be kind hearted and soft hearted, but not to a point where it's going to bankrupt her business or sabotage what she's built. So there's only so far you can go in any direction on this. But on the flip side, Tonya, what's your biggest strength?
I think I intuitively know what people need. Many times patients would come in with on paper, looks like one particular complaint. But something inside tells me there's something more. And as I dig deeper, sometimes it's something totally different. And by allowing my intuition to guide me, I make decisions that I would never have made before. And I can't explain sometimes why I have done things in the past or why how I know certain things that people need or my business needs. So by allowing my intuition to guide me, I have exceeded my limitations and expectations.
Fire Nation. Why do we want to live a life that's not guided by our gut, by our intuition, by our heart, by our soul?
Let it.
It's a great feeling and no, it's not infallible. But believe me, more times than not, you're gonna be glad that you did. Now, Tanya, what's the one thing that has you most fired up today?
I'm fired up about getting my message out to people. My message that they are in charge of their health and well being and that there are so many tools that they to get well. And it's not only with traditional medicine, but we can use. I now practice functional medicine. I do teach them meditation and yoga and reflexology and mindfulness. There's so many tools that we have to get ourselves well. And I'm fired up about getting that message out and empowering people to take charge of their health and not leave it in the hands of their physician or the drugs. Because many people come to me and think they just need a prescription and they'll be well. And I want people to know that many, many times it's not a pill and it's not a disease. It's a dis ease that's happening in their life. And once we address the root cause of what's going on, they can be healed.
It's a dis ease. I mean, what a powerful statement. Fire Nation. Look within yourself and say, hey, how can I start from the core and move outwards? I mean, that's where it all starts. Yes, I am.
What was holding you back from becoming an entrepreneur?
I think I didn't want to admit that I was an entrepreneur. When you, when we are taught medicine, we're not taught that there is a business aspect of medicine. And I was afraid to bucked the system by saying that I owned a business and that my clinic was actually a business. And it wasn't until I owned up being a business person and an entrepreneur did I look at how I ran the clinic in a new way and brought in new services and new products into and I now call, I no longer call it the clinic. I actually call it my business.
What's the best advice you've ever received?
It was actually from Gabby Bernstein. I was so afraid of how do I call it? Starting my online business and sharing the fact that I was ready to heal minds and spirits. And I had done her Spirit Junkie Masterclass 1 and 2 courses. So I'm certified to teach her courses but was so afraid to let people know that this doctor was also doing this. And she read me a quote by Yogi Bhajan which says when the time is on, you start and the pressure will be off. And that just did it. And I thought start and the pressure will be off. And I just did it. And that's how I got into running my online group courses. I met new people and I just shift. My life shifted once I started teaching people the principles of that course. But what I saw was that they were healing their minds and spirits and that brought even greater joy to me than just healing their bodies.
There is so much power in just starting Fire Nation. What's a personal habit, Tanya, that contributes to your success?
I pray and meditate daily. I think connecting to a divine power, connecting to a source higher than you and believing that there is something higher than you, guiding your life in is critical to achieving contentment and success.
Can you share an Internet resource like an evernote with Fire Nation?
Dropbox? Mine is Dropbox. I'll tell you a little joke. I'm studying for an exam in functional medicine that's on the 21st of September and I've been first time in my life making notes online and my computer crashed. Oh, 75 pages of notes. But I had saved it in Dropbox, and that's the only thing that saved me from just melting down, just crying.
You can just say you would. You would have ugly cried.
I would have had a big ugly cry. And I thought, oh, thank God. I think I saved them. I always save things in Dropbox and that has saved my life. My photos, my notes. Yeah, anything I'm going to be doing, I think of ideas for my business, I make a note and I save it in Dropbox.
I'm a big believer in redundancy, Fire Nation. Redundancy is huge. So Dropbox is great. I also use Backblaze, which is killer because it's automatically backing everything up that I'm doing literally all the day long. 24. 7 plus once a week, right there on my calendar, it pops up and it says, back up your hard drive onto a physical console. So I have this like 10 terabyte physical thing. I just plug it into my computer, said it's a usb. I just plug it into the back of the computer and like an hour later it's done. And it just saved all of my computer up to that date. So at the very worst, you know, if Dropbox dies, if Backblaze dies, which, by the way, is never gonna happen, but I still have that one physical thing that will always have at least, you know, up to. At the very worst, four or five of my last days might be lost. I back it up once a week. So have a little redundancy in your life. Fire Nation and Tanya, if you could just recommend one book, what would it be and why?
The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo. It's described as a guidebook for a journey with soul. And it is just that. It's really daily essays on life and spirituality. And this book, I can say it fills your soul. It reaches in, it touches you and tugs at your heart. I recommend that book to so many people, you know, in whatever, wherever they are in their life, if they're retiring, if they're sick, if they're celebrating something. There is something every day that you read that will touch you and create a little shift in your life and change you spiritually.
Tawny, I want to end today on Fire with a parting piece of guidance from you, the best way that we can connect with you and then we'll say goodbye.
I think my best piece of advice to anybody would be be true to who you are. I tell people when I was living my other life as a traditional doctor, I wasn't being true to who I was. And it wasn't until I got quiet, listened to myself and got to know who I was that I was able to acknowledge who I was and what my dreams were. So my best piece of advice is get quiet on a regular basis. The answers of who you are and what you are supposed to do with your life will come. And then I urge you to listen to those voices. Once you start living your life according to those voices and according to your truth, life becomes so much fuller and more fulfilling.
And what's the best way that we can connect with you?
