Are Silent Struggles Affecting Your Marriage?

Tim Arrigo talks to husbands about the unspoken pain they carry and how it kills intimacy. He argues that buried hurt, not malice, is what breaks marriages, and that honest self-examination is the only way to repair what silence has damaged.

You can't speak to your wife's pain because you can't speak about yours. You got skeletons in your closet that you have yet to confront. And guess what? You can't conquer what you don't confront, brother. And so you're living a life of denial, a life of self-deception. You can't speak about your pain because you truly haven't overcome it. And that's why everybody in your life is becoming the collateral damage, and you're wounding every single individual in your life. I know what it feels like to take out pain and frustration on people you love, and that inevitably backfires from you, because what do you want? You want connection, you want true love, you want intimacy, you want that vulnerability, but that has a price. And you're not willing to pay that price. And what is the price of admission for the life of connection that you want with your wife? You know what the price of admission is? Honesty with yourself. The ability to introspect, to self-reflect, to do some self-analysis and look within yourself to acknowledge the unresolved pain that you have yet to confront. You know, a lot of times inside these arguments, you know what you hear? You don't hear what your wife is saying. You hear it through the filter of your own pain. You're listening to your wife through the filter of your own pain, your own anguish, your own guilt, the sadness, the shame. And you live in denial about the fact that you have inner conflict that needs to be prioritized and resolved now. And see, the saddest part in your life is you don't realize that what's on the other side of this pain that you continue to prolong, what's on the other side of it is a story. What does that story do? It liberates others from their darkness. You become a living inspiration inside your wife's life, inside your marriage. You set the tone. Are you going to choose influence or dominance? You know what dominance says? I want this and I want that and do this my way and I want to have it my way. But influence knows that in time, that by leading by example, if I can bring out the worst in people around me, I can bring out the best in them too. Are you leading with influence or are you leading with dominance? See, here you are in this position, you don't realize that you must overcome your own internal pain. Because to empathize with your own wife, you have to be able to connect with yourself first. The lack of connection, the disconnection, the dissociation you have with yourself only promotes isolation, disconnection from your wife. You want to connect to your wife? Connect to yourself first. It's time for you to do some real archaeology. How do archaeologists dig? Slowly, so much to the extent they use little, you know, little brushes and they sift away dust and debris. And what do they reveal? They reveal artifacts, relics from the past, things that have always been there that you couldn't see with the naked eye. They were beneath the surface. And then what do they do with those things? They study those things. They understand how they relate to today. How is my past showing up in my marriage without my permission, without my consent? How is my inner conflict sabotaging my marriage? And then once they study those things, they put those things on display for somebody else to learn from. That's your story. One day you're going to tell your story of what you overcame. And what you went through to get to where you are, and it's going to be somebody else's survival guide. You're over here being selfish, holding in this powerful story of triumph over your own pain. You can have and be anything you want. As long as you're willing to pay the price for it. And guess what the price is? The price for the life that you want is the life that you're living right now. The denial, the self-manipulation, the self-deception, and the fact that you don't truly go within. You can't fix the inside from the outside. You can only fix the inside from the inside.
