Marriage Is the Fire That Forges You

Tim Arrigo argues that marriage is where men face their deepest spiritual work. Instead of avoiding your wife's emotions or shutting down, he says real Christian manhood means staying present, listening, and examining yourself. That discomfort is your cross to carry.
Chapters
The moment you try to avoid suffering in your marriage is the very moment that you move furthest away from who God called you to be. See, scripture says, "Endure suffering along with me as a soldier of Christ Jesus." Most guys read this and they think it's talking about persecution or hardship from the outside world, and they miss the most profound truth in this scripture. It's that suffering that transforms you most. Isn't from the external, it's from the internal. It's facing your own brokenness, your own sin, your own need for redemption. And see, nowhere will you face that suffering more intensely than in your own marriage, brother. Your wife's emotions make you uncomfortable? That discomfort is sacred suffering. Your need to control everything or fix everything is being challenged? That frustration is holy ground. The mirror that she's holding up to parts of yourself that you don't want to see or look at? That pain is where Christ meets you. But see, what do we do so much of the time as men? We run, we avoid, we numb, we blame our wives for the very suffering that God is using to sanctify us. We say, she's too emotional, she's never satisfied, she doesn't appreciate what I do for her and the family. And you're literally rejecting the cross that God's given you to carry. Jesus didn't avoid suffering, he chose it, man. He walked towards the cross, he didn't walk away from it. And he calls you and me to do the same thing in our marriage. When our wives are upset and we want to shut down, we need to choose to be present in the moment. That's our cross to bear. When our wives are processing emotions and we want to fix or dismiss them, but we choose to listen, that's our cross to bear. When she's showing you patterns in yourself that make you uncomfortable to look at, but you choose to look honestly, that's your cross to bear. See, the guys who try to avoid suffering by controlling their wives, dismissing their feelings, or just checking out entirely, they're not being strong. They're being cowardly. They're running from the very thing that God wants to use to make them more like Christ. But see, the guys who lean into suffering, who choose to be present in the discomfort, who allow their wives and their marriages to be an instrument of their own sanctification, they discover something incredibly profound. It's that that's where real strength is forged. When we stop running from suffering, the suffering of authentic connection, and start embracing that as God's tool for our transformation, that's when it changes. That's when our marriage becomes a crucible where our character is refined, where our faith gets deepened, and our capacity to love like Christ is expanded. Brother, the cross wasn't comfortable, and following Christ isn't either, and neither is the kind of marriage that actually transforms us as men into the men that God created us to be. So look, If you're ready to stop avoiding the, the sacred suffering of authentic marriage and connection and start embracing it as God's path to your transformation, reach out to us about Beyond Driven's Brotherhood inside the Total Breakthrough Academy. Every day we show guys how to carry that cross with courage and to be forged in fire to become the man, the husband, and the father that God called them to be.
