Tim Arrigo argues that your emotions come from how you perceive events, not the events themselves. Master your reactions and you master your world.

One of the primary tenets in self-mastery is to understand the relationship between how you think, how you feel, and how you behave. See, we are never disturbed by external events. We are always disturbed by the perceptions we hold of these events. Meaning people, places, and things don't have the power to make you feel anything. What has the power to make you feel something is your perception of these things. Let me give you an example. I could be standing on the street corner with 3 people, okay? And a car full of girls could drive by and laugh. I might think they're laughing at me. The person next to me might have thought they were laughing at something behind us, and the person next to him might have thought they thought he was handsome. See, the situation never holds the power. The perception does. So much of our life, we're allowing situations to choose feelings for us. Let me say that again. We're allowing situations to choose feelings for us. And what we're not doing is we're not taking total and complete ownership over our emotional life. I have to be the common denominator in my emotional world if I want to develop self-mastery. And so think about it like this. The situations in your life are different. The people in your life are different. Yeah, the triggers in your life might be different, but the same core beliefs keep getting triggered time and time again. We call it a theme. It's a theme in your life. So let's imagine that we went to a party one day, and before we walked into that party, I told you, hey, by the way, everybody in this party hates you. Well, you wouldn't know why that person didn't hold the door for you. You would know why that person was in the back of the party pointing at us and laughing. You would know why that person didn't offer you food. At the party. You would know why maybe somebody else left the party early. What about when we left that party, I told you, hey, by the way, I was just joking. I was just kidding. You would realize that what I told you created a belief system that created a lens. It created a filter that affected the way that you were seeing and perceiving everything in your external environment. So much of the time, people are giving away power to the external when the true power lies within, in the internal. It's all about your relationship to the adversity. It's all about your relationship to the circumstances in your life. See, the true sign of self-mastery is that the situations in your life haven't changed, but your response has. The only way to develop power and control over a situation is to do it in here, in the mind. That's the only true way to develop control over situations. See, if you think situations make you feel things, then what do you try to control? The external. But see, you can't fix the inside from the outside. And so many people become dependent on controlling external situations— people, places, and things— because they've never experienced real control from within. That's why when we understand this, the words 'you make me feel,' 'this makes me feel' should never come out of our mouth again, because we realize that the person that makes us feel is ourselves.
