Receiving Love When You Feel Unworthy

Tim Arrigo explores why people struggle to receive love when they feel unworthy. He explains how love becomes performance-driven and validation-seeking, then walks through the inward work needed to restore presence and actually accept love from family.

Client earlier told me that his wife said, you don't know how to love me. But see, the problem is, is not so much that we don't know how to give love a lot of times, it's that we don't know how to receive it. Unconditional love is something that's foreign to a lot of us. A lot of us have gone into the external to try and prove that we're lovable, that love was performance-based. We fell into the trap of performing performance-based love, that love was something we had to work for, it was something we had to earn, it was something we had to prove we deserved. So the only way we knew how to show our love was through material objects, through providing a great life. But in providing a great life, it's been empty and hollow because what's been missing has been us and our presence and the love that we don't have for ourselves. So you can't give what you don't truly possess, and so We can't give it away. We can't love other people because truly we don't know how to accept the love that they offer. The love that comes to you unconditionally, brother, that's right in front of your face. Sometimes you can't receive that because a part of you believes that you don't deserve it, and that's a lie. You don't know how to organize around unconditional love unless you have to prove yourself, unless it's like there's a ball and you have a, you know, a net at the end of the court and there's a goal that you're trying to achieve. You only work, so your love isn't really love. The love that you seek is truly just validation. You know validation, but you don't know true love. And that's because a lot of times you weren't offered true love. It wasn't modeled for you. It's not something that's comfortable for you. It's uncomfortable for you. It does— it's not— it feels awkward. It feels— and I understand that. But don't you understand the fact that you block yourself off from from that love, keeps people feeling disconnected from you. The only way to solve this problem is you have to learn to foster and cultivate that love within you and learn how to receive the love that people have for you so that you can give it back. The law of reciprocity. You're stuck in this performance-based lifestyle, but you've reached the top of the mountain and there's nowhere else to go from there. You've achieved it all, but the one thing you haven't achieved is the love and connection that you once felt inside your marriage, and you lost that love and connection. You lost that passion. You lost that romance. You lost the fire that was there. And the only way to fix it is to return back here. It's the inside, brother. It's the inside. You've been going into the external to try and solve it. It's on the inside. It's the inside-out method. It's going in here and looking in here and saying, what is missing in me that I can't organize around the fact that I have a beautiful family? You got a beautiful family, and all they want is your presence. All they want is for you to be available. They just want to feel loved by you, man. How is that so hard for you to understand? But I get it because I've been there, and a part of me actually believed that I didn't deserve that kind of love. And that's why a lot of times I sabotaged my own life, engaged in self-destructive behaviors, inevitably sending a message to myself, which was what? The same broken and distorted message that I believed that I deserved, which was what? That I'm unlovable unless I can earn it, unless I can prove it, unless I can work for it. I don't know how to relate to it. You mean I don't need to work for this? You just love the authentic version of me? I don't know how to relate to this. This is uncomfortable for me. You mean I don't have to say or do anything? You just want me to be me and you love me just the way I am? I don't know how to relate to this. I don't know how to do this. Because this part of me is still fractured. It's time to go back here, man. It's time to go inside. What is fractured in me that inhibits my ability to receive the beautiful love that my family is dying to freely offer me.
