Tim Arrigo argues that judging your past actions with today's knowledge is unfair, since you acted based on what you knew then. Growth only happens after you forgive yourself and stop the cycle of blame, guilt, and shame. Self-belief and self-compassion come first.

It's time to end the self-condemnation, brother. It's time to stop beating yourself up. It's time for you to develop a relationship with you where you believe in you again. It's easy to look back with our ego and say what I should have done, what I could have done, based on what I know now. But that is called hindsight bias. And see, hindsight can be 20/20. And then we start to blame ourselves looking back, like I should have done this, and I knew that this was wrong and what I should have done at the time. But brother, you did exactly what you should have done based on how you were conditioned up until that moment. Every wave has the whole ocean behind it. And how unfair is it for you to blame yourself of something that you were not aware of at the time? See, growth comes on the other side of our self-condemnation. Growth comes on the other side of when we stop blaming ourselves, when we stop beating ourselves up. Because self-criticism is not the pathway to a new life. Self-criticism is not the pathway to our transformation. Self-criticism is not the pathway to our higher calling. It's accepting forgiveness from God, grace from God, mercy from God that only he can provide, the divine revelation that he brought upon you to get your eyes to open, that when the scales fall off, for you to see the truth and realize that you didn't know what you know now. And that's okay, brother. It's okay. It's okay if you got blindsided by your wife wanting to leave you or wanting a divorce and you didn't know what you know now. It's okay. We all have blind spots. But you have to understand that you can't beat yourself with guilt and shame and regret and remorse into something greater, into a greater version of you. That is promoted by belief in yourself. That is promoted by truth and honesty. That is promoted by understanding that the first person you need to forgive is yourself.
