Tim Arrigo argues that men's deepest fear is appearing incompetent, which drives defensive behavior, constant need to be right, and aggression. This masks an inner wound. Men try to fix internal deficits with external success, leading to stress, burnout, and displaced anger onto loved ones, which creates shame that pulls them back into the cycle. Breaking free requires confronting and healing the internal wounds.

Every man's greatest fear is to look or feel incompetent. That's why a lot of guys operate out of ego. They try to prove their worth. They get so defensive, they deflect, they project onto other people. They always need to be right. They're operating out of ego because deep down inside they're truly insecure. They truly feel less than. They feel like less of a man. They try to bury and hide and be in denial about the things that still operate in their shadow, still operate in their life without their permission or their consent. They're operating from a wound. They're not operating from true confidence. They're not operating from a space of true congruency within themselves, authenticity, right? True freedom, alignment with who they are. They're like a house divided. And so what happens is they become consumed with the external, trying to fix the inside from the outside. They become consumed by their success, and as a result of that, they get overly stressed, burn out, and then take out their anger and aggression on everybody they love, including the teams around them, their coworkers, their spouse, their children. And when that happens, they feel a lot of shame and guilt because other people become the collateral damage to them overcompensating, trying to, right, make up for what they believe they lack, which is what? Being enough. And so when other people become the collateral damage, they feel the shame and guilt, which spirals them back into the same emotions of feeling like less of a man, which then again, they turn to vices to escape. And then what? That only reinforces this cycle. That's why you got to resolve these wounds. You got to stop operating from true wounds in your life, and you got to start operating from a space of true freedom. And how do you do that? By going on the inside to fix the inside. That's where true power is found.
