Tim Arrigo argues procrastination is self-sabotage rooted in missing grit and perseverance. Motivation doesn't drive action; determination does, built on clear purpose and long-term goals. Without it, people chase short-term pleasure and freeze when challenged, damaging teams and relationships.

The surest, fastest way to sabotage your success is procrastination. Procrastination is a form of self-sabotage, and procrastination happens when instant gratification is not an option. We need to realize that procrastination is a form of avoidance. It's a form of self-betrayal, self-neglect. It's when we can't self-regulate. And the real reason a lot of times that we're procrastinating is because we don't have grit, we don't have perseverance, we don't have endurance, we don't have courage, we don't have fortitude. It's not really the procrastination that's the issue. It's what's lacking beneath it. That's why all the time people say, Tim, how do you stay motivated? How do you stay motivated? I don't rely on motivation. I rely on determination. And when we procrastinate in our business, our social life, our romantic life, physically, mentally, spiritually, it's because we can't internalize our own intentions. We're not really sure about where we're going, our vision for the future. There's no— like, we're confused. There's no clarity there. And then we don't act on the things that we need to do now. We push the actions that we need to take today off until tomorrow. So your procrastination is a form of avoidance. It's an avoidant coping skill. It's a form of both freeze and flight. Instead of choosing to fight with the issues that you're faced with in your life, you're, you're freezing and you're fleeing. It destroys teams. It destroys the workplace. It destroys private relationships. And the less meaningful your goals are to you, the less likely you'll want to do the tasks that you need to do today. So my question is, like, where is your sense of purpose in what you're doing? Don't rely on motivation. Rely on determination. That's, that's why we never go back to trying to get motivated. It's like we have goals, we have a vision, and regardless of how we feel, we're getting into action towards these things. That's what be, be being beyond driven is really about. And when we don't self-regulate, when we don't regulate our emotions and how we feel, right? That's what self-control is. It's doing something despite the fact I know I don't have to do it, and not doing something despite the fact that I know I could. Self-regulation is managing your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It's knowing when to approach a situation and attack it with tenacity, right? Avoiding short-term pleasure for long-term self-respect. And self-respect, you guys, that's the fruit of discipline. Self-respect is the fruit of discipline. A sense of dignity in yourself grows by being able to say no to yourself. Being able to say no to yourself, because when your vision for the future, when your goals, when your dreams are non-negotiable, So are the steps to get there, guys. So end procrastinating now and invest in yourself before you regret the fact that you chose instant gratification and comfort, what, over achieving your goals and long-term satisfaction and self-esteem and self-confidence for the fact that you went all in and you followed through on what you said you were going to do.
