Tim Arrigo explains repetition compulsion, the unconscious drive to reenact past traumas and failed relationship patterns. You can't change what you don't see, so he argues therapy or coaching is essential to break these cycles and build a life aligned with your actual values instead of your wounds.

There's a phenomenon happening inside your life and marriage that you're completely unaware of, and it's called repetition compulsion. And this is where we unconsciously repeat behaviors, situations, and patterns from our past, oftentimes from our childhood or other traumatic experiences. This right here is an unconscious process, meaning we're not even aware of it. We're typically unaware of how we repeat the nature of the same actions that are linked to the same underlying reasons or causes. So what happens is we end up recreating scenarios that mirror past traumas or unresolved conflicts in an attempt to gain control or achieve a different outcome, meaning we reenact or replay a past experience in the present moment in an attempt to overcome the past or to tie up loose ends. So what happens is we emotionally relive the past. We find ourselves in situations that evoke the same emotions, the same emotions we experienced from that past event, and it manifests inside patterns in our relationship. We repeatedly engage in the same dysfunctional dynamics from the past. It's your second third marriage, and you're finding yourself in the exact same situation that you were in, in the previous relationship. And what happens is you find yourself in this pattern of self-destruction where you're unconsciously repeating these things. You're unaware. It's out of your conscious awareness. And see, we need to become conscious because consciousness allows us to make choices, and choices allow us to change. Brother, healthy people go to therapy. Healthy people join support groups. Healthy people do coaching. Healthy people ask for help. That's why when it's out of your awareness, you need people in your life to help you illuminate those blind spots. You need people in your life to help you to stop the repetition compulsion, to break the cycles. To promote healthier patterns of behavior and hold you accountable to the best version of you. That's what this is all about. Now, why? Why break out of those patterns? So you can live as the most multidimensional version of who you are and who God created you to be, so you can meet every moment with whatever that moment most requires from you. But see, you can't do that when you're stuck in the same cycles, repeating the past, reliving the past. You can't change the past. You can only change your relationship to it. And the way that you change your relationship to your past is by going within and understanding the story, the narrative, and the way that you relive, replay, and reenact patterns from your past in the present moment.
