What does legacy mean to you?

Tim Arrigo explains how chronic stress keeps your brain in fight-or-flight mode, making you reactive and controlling. Parents become templates for their kids: daughters learn how men will treat them, sons learn how to handle hardship. Your legacy isn't your achievements. It's whether you made people feel safe.

It's like you know exactly what to say and exactly what to do, but when the time comes to actually do it and follow through, you can't. And I've been there. You're in a chronic state of fight or flight. Your limbic system, your midbrain, is on high alert. And so you're constantly perceiving and seeing threats that aren't actually there. So you're reacting to situations that would normally never warrant that reaction. You can't stop, pause, allow the emotion to flow through you like a current and then operate from a state of higher consciousness. You can't remove ego and emotion, digest and reflect and move into a state of decision-making, logic, discernment, judgment, reasoning, because you're not operating from your cortex. You're operating from your body, what you're feeling, what's visceral, what's not ethereal above the neck. You're constantly chronically stressed and This is basically how you've been able to make things happen in your life, because you grinded it out, you pushed through, you grinded down, you've achieved all these things in your life because of that persistence and that perseverance. But then you become a pushover in your house because that doesn't work in a marriage, that doesn't work with your family. You can't just steamroll people, you can't just bulldoze people, because that's called being narcissistic, being controlling, and being way too dominant over people that need you to be available. It's like, you got— when you have a family, when you have children, when you have a daughter, you have a daughter, you start to realize something. It's like, man, these are my kids, and I am literally the template for these children. Who's my daughter going to want to be with? A man that treats her the same way that I do. I'm not teaching my daughter how to be a woman. I'm teaching her how to be treated by men. And your son, you're teaching him how to be a man. You're paving the way. You're teaching him how to face adversity, how to manage his emotions, how to manage stress. How are you soothing? How are you regulating your emotion? Because your kids are picking up on it. You got to step back and learn how to manage your stress, or else it's going to take you to an early grave and drive everybody closest to you away from you. They're going to walk on eggshells. They're not going to want to be around you. They're not going to want to spend time with you because you're not a safe person. Nobody wants to be around people who don't make them feel comfortable, who don't make them feel safe in their environment. And trust me, I know that some of you probably grew up in an environment with somebody that made you feel that way. And then think about it, now you've become that person in your family's life. How does that feel? Feels terrible. It feels terrible. So the real question is, are you going to step back, learn how to downshift so that you stop engaging in these behaviors and wounding other people? That's the real question. What will your legacy be? How will people remember you? Because they're not going to remember what you did or what you said as much as they're going to remember how you made them feel. And how they felt when they were around you.
