Tim Arrigo explains why people sabotage genuine love: they're conditioned to believe love must be earned through performance, so unconditional love feels foreign and threatening. This addiction to work and external validation leaves personal relationships hollow. He argues the fix starts with self-love and admitting your fear of intimate connection.

You can't accept unconditional love, so you sabotage it. Yeah, there's a part of you that can't accept unconditional love, or you don't believe that you deserve unconditional love because you never had it. What you're used to is performance-based love. Love was something that you had to earn, something you had to work for, and something you had to prove you deserved. That's why your idea of love is to work. That's why you're addicted to work. That's why you're consumed by your career. And that's why you distract yourself from how you feel about yourself and everything else that's going on in your life through work. And the problem is, is that everybody in your life calls you a success. But see, check it out. If you're a success in work and your marriage is failing, you're not a success. If you're a success at work and your kids are suffering, you're not a success. That's a facade, and that's a way that you live in denial about the real reality of who you are when you're not working, who you are without your career. Who would you be without your business? That's the real question. And everybody in your life, see, they get the leftovers. Your kids, your wife, they get the leftovers. They get the version of you that's already given himself for the world. And see, at what expense? It's like, what does it pay for a man to conquer and win over over the whole world but lose his own soul in the process, to lose his own family in the process. Is that what you wanted? What did you do all this for? To enjoy it and share it with the people that you love. Yeah, part of you, you can't conceptualize that people love you unconditionally. And so there's a fractured part of you that wants to prove or get other people to prove that they don't love you. You like to keep people at a distance. It's like, I give you all of me, honey. No, you don't. You get bits and pieces, bro. Why? Because you're scared. You're fearful of that deeper intimate connection. Just be honest, man. Just acknowledge it. Admit it. Why? Because you don't have it with yourself. You don't even know what self-love is. Describe self-love. See, the problem is, is when people in your life love you unconditionally, you can't actually imagine what it's like to have that type of a relationship with somebody. And see, that's all they want from you, man. All they want from you is your love. Is that too much to ask? And see, all you really want from them is to feel admired, to feel respected. You want to go back to those happy times, laughing, giggling with your wife. The joy, the joy that's been siphoned from your life. So the real question is, brother, why would you continue to sabotage love when people are so freely willing to just give that over to you? I'll tell you why. Because you're so desperate for love. You're so desperate for validation, affirmation, —recognition that you don't even know what it looks like when it's right in front of your face.
