Tim Arrigo says recurring marital problems aren't random but addictive patterns sustained by hidden payoffs like control or distance. He shares his own marriage turnaround and offers a spiritual practice: when tension rises, pray one sentence asking God to reveal the payoff, then do the opposite action. Trading those rewards for Christ-centered choices breaks the loop.

You can't see what is feeding you, and that's why the pattern survives in the first place. In my life, I didn't suffer in silence, and I didn't build just to numb myself. Built because God kept calling me higher and higher, and he's calling you higher and higher. I went from motel floors to real restoration in my life, from chaos to a thriving marriage, from surviving to leading men back to their identity. And I've watched the same truth play out thousands of times over and over and over again. See, if your marriage keeps looping, there's a payoff hiding underneath it. Now hear me out. Control buys you safety. Rescuing buys you significance. Distance buys you protection from shame and guilt. See, as long as the payoff feeds you, then the pattern owns you. I know from experience. And here's the shift so many guys I'm working with right now are making. It's when you stop asking God to change your house. Stop expecting marriage and family therapists to advocate for you and middleman or mediate your marriage. Instead, ask God to expose to you what your reactions or what your survival patterns or behaviors are providing you with. Just name it out loud, say it, declare it, and then trade it. So when the next time tension arises, pray one sentence: Lord, show me the payoff and give me the courage to choose love right now. Say that one truth: I don't need control to be safe. Christ is my security. And do one opposite action. What's the opposite action? Maybe it's soften your tone. Maybe it's own your part. Maybe it's make a small repair in the marriage. Forgive. But do it now, in real time. Don't wait for later. Don't sell yourself out on the mirage, thinking there's water down the road, only to come to find out that it's actually hotter. And Watch how the room changes when you, man of God, experience a heart change. Romans 12:2 says, do not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. When truth gets in here, and God's truth is above our thoughts. But try this shift, shift into what am I getting out of this dysfunctional pattern? Because with any negative behavior, we're always seeking some positive result.
