Why Your Colleagues Will Overtake You If You Ignore AI

A short spoken presentation by Tim Davies advising individuals and business leaders to actively learn and experiment with emerging AI tools. He recommends replacing passive social media use with daily listening (15 minutes) and weekly hands-on play with tools (ChatGPT, MidJourney, VO3), establishing peer groups and company practices, and creating lightweight AI policies to enable safe experimentation.

Okay, so what should you be doing to stay ahead? How are you going to make the most of this amazing wave of new technology to ensure that both personally and professionally and within a company and the company you potentially own is making the most of this incredible time? It is the best time to be involved in technology. We're having a huge amount of fun working on the fringes of what's possible, understanding what those gaps and barriers are, and then sharing those capabilities and potential with our customers. But what about you, you as an individual? Well, if you're spending some of your day doom scrolling on social media, it's a pretty, pretty strong symbol that you could be using that time more wisely. So instead of endlessly flicking, why don't you find a person, a channel, a podcast that you like the way that they talk, that you appreciate the content that they share, and spend some of that time that you were just endlessly flicking through social media content that wasn't really doing anything other than hitting dopamine to understand more about what's possible. And if you do that for just 15 minutes a day, you're ahead of the masses. If you also dedicate a bit of time each week to playing with a new capability, to trying different prompts in ChatGPT and MidJourney in a video creator like VO3, then you're getting an understanding of what's possible and you're ahead of your peers. So I think the best thing that everybody can be doing to advance their understanding in this amazing time of change is to spend time listening and to spend time playing. And if you do those two things on a regular basis, you will be ahead of your peers and that will put you in a great position going forward. If you don't and you carry on just scrolling, you are going to miss out on what's possible and you will be left behind. People will move quicker than you, they will get a better understanding and you'll feel like a dumb person in the room even though you're not, because they're saying things that you don't understand. It's not difficult to get a good understanding of what's possible, but it does take some time. So I'd like you to find time within your day, within your week, block time in your calendar to spend a bit of effort making sure you understand what's possible. Even better would be finding a group of like minded professionals that you can do some form of peer networking on this with so you can share best practices. Because if you're all looking, playing and understanding and you're sharing those understandings on a regular basis, then you all lift because your shared understanding will be greater. So if you're listening to this and you own a business, you need to be putting those practices into your employee processes so that the members of your team are dedicating time within their calendar to going to webinars, to attending training sessions, dedicating time to play, to understand what's possible, to test new prompts, to test automation platforms, and to have a forum where that is not only shared, but is positively encouraged. Now, ideally, you do this within a structure that has a specific AI policy. So you've laid out what is acceptable and what is not acceptable, how it's appropriate to use company data, what the barriers are in terms of confidentiality, in terms of privacy of data. But really encouraging that lightweight play and making it a forum for fun, where everybody is learning and sharing those experiences is what's going to lift your company. If you'd like help on how to do that, please get in touch. But I think everybody has the ability to, to make a little change in their lives that will increase their understanding of technology and make this an easier transition for them.
