AI Emotion Detection: Revolutionizing Mental Health Support

TJ Walker leads a discussion and live-demo showing AI that can detect and generate human emotions. He argues emotion-detection could aid mental-health responses (e.g., crisis hotlines, multilingual support, automated emergency alerts like calling 911) and save lives and money. A demonstration with Speaker B and ChatGPT shows the model detecting perceived emotion, generating emotive voice styles, and producing a bedtime story; TJ emphasizes the surprising human-like conversational tone and expressiveness.

Anyone who's trying to help another human being in any kind of an emotional state, being able to detect the emotion is going to be a fantastic thing. I mean, think of how many small towns that might not even have an active 911 or an active police presence where an AI could detect if someone is so emotional they're about to kill themselves. I think this would be wildly, wildly helpful and useful where more people could be helped and a lot of money could be saved. And you and I know some of you are thinking, well tj, that can't replace a real human being. Human beings are always going to be better. Maybe, but what about if you're having a crisis? And I'm just thinking, this is just an idea popping into my head right now. What if you're in a mid sized city and you're calling a crisis hotline in your city and you only speak Vietnamese and nobody in the, you know, Cleveland crisis center speaks Vietnamese. To be able to speak to an artificial intelligence bot who could answer your questions, detect your emotion, Perhaps even call 911 because they can tell by analyzing the emotional content of how you're communicating that you're about to kill yourself. And it could save a life. So the, the impact of this, I think affects so many industries. Excuse me, my face just got blurry on camera three here. Sometimes I have to pop up there. I got it out of focus. So I love the fact that the latest development is that the AI can detect emotion. That in full disclosure, that's not in my AI yet, but if it's here on OpenAI, it should be trickling down to all the platforms that are using the same underlying technology. So I'm very excited about that. And this is why I think a lot of people historically have said, well, I can never be replaced by a computer because only I as a therapist or as someone prepping someone to appear in a jury, or as a speech coach or as a singing coach, only I can detect the human emotion. Well, we just saw a demonstration right there that a computer could detect human emotion. Let's watch more and of running a.
Little bit too fast. So, you know, it really has that capability across the board to perceive your emotion. Not only that though, the model is able to generate voice in a variety of different emotive styles and it really has a wide dynamic range. So I'm going to fire up another demo. Hey, chatgpt, how are you doing?
I'm doing fantastic, thanks for asking. How about you? Pretty good, what's up?
So my friend Barrett here, he's been having trouble sleeping lately. And I want you to tell him a bedtime story about robots and love.
Oh, a bedtime story about robots and love. I got you covered. Gather round. Barrett. Once upon a time.
So this might not be your style, but I gotta tell you, this really sounds, if not like a human being, at least like a world class script writer who had weeks to write a script to make an AI sound like a human being. It does not sound like typical computer. Full sentences thusly, moreover, mitigate. I mean, it really does sound more like a human being. Even the saying what's up? Is not something I'm used to seeing a computer spit out. It really does sound conversational. Now, let's listen to this bedtime story. I've not heard it yet, but let's see what it came up with instantly.
A time in a world not too different from ours, there was a robot named Bite. Bite was a curious robot, always exploring this story.
But I want a little bit more emotion in your voice, A little bit more drama.
Got it? Let's add some drama. Once upon a time, in a world not too different from ours, the there was a robot named. No, no, no.
Chachi. I really want maximal emotion, like maximal expressiveness.
Much more than you were doing before.
Understood? Let's amplify the drama. Once upon a time, in a world not too different from ours, there was a robot.
