TJ Walker argues that good habits stick when you design your environment to make them effortless. Put your book within arm's reach and your phone across the room. Write down your next work task before you leave so you don't waste energy deciding where to start.

Ultimize. Friction is powerful for stopping bad habits, but it's only half the system. The other half is just as important: ease. You got to make the good stuff easy. If you want to do something consistently, you have to make it easy. So easy that it becomes the default. Let's take something simple. You want to read more, but your book is in another room and your phone is— it's right here in your hand, or it's right next to you. So what happens? You use the phone. You pick up the phone, not because you chose it, because it's easier. Now flip that. Put the book where you sit. Put the phone out of reach. Now what happens? You read more from the book. Yeah, not because you changed, because the environment changed. Here's another example. You want to work on an important project, but every time you sit down, You have to figure out what to do next. That creates friction. It really slows you down, so you avoid it. Now imagine this instead. At the end of each work session, you write down the very next step, so when you come back, you don't really have to think about it. You just start. You just do it. That's ease. You remove the barrier to beginning, and beginning is often the hardest part. So your job is to design your environment so that good behaviors require as little effort as possible. Put tools where you need them. Remove unnecessary steps. Make the starting point abundantly obvious, because when something's easy, you don't need a lot of motivation. You don't need discipline. You just do it. That's why we check our email constantly. It's so easy to do it. And when you combine that friction for bad habits Something powerful happens. Your default behavior changes, not because you are forcing it, because it is the path of least resistance. And that is how real productivity is built. It is not through constant effort. It is through smarter design.
