Trump carried the district by 22% a year ago, and the Republican nominee only won by 9% this time. That's a huge drop of Republican favorability. But that's normal when one party controls the White House. They tend to lose the next special election. But here's the thing. There's a chance the Democrats blew this. If they had had a candidate who seemed more moderate or even slightly conservative for a district like this, they had, they might have actually won.
